Ongkaar Nirankaar: Chanting theKnown and Unknown Divine

Snatam Kaur
Snatam Kaur
Apr 28, 2022
10 min de lectura

In this Kirtan and Kundalini workshop, Snatam Kaur teaches the Ongkaar Nirankaar mantra—a Sikh meditation practice that holds the tension between Ongkaar (the divine manifestation perceivable in action on the physical plane) and Nirankaar (the unseen, unknown divine). Through breath work, gentle yoga poses, and extended chanting, participants learn to access the soul's prayer rather than the mind's desires, finding deep peace and acceptance when facing hopelessness or exhaustion. The workshop models how listening and breath awareness form the foundation of mantra practice.

What Does Ongkaar Nirankaar Mean?

The mantra Ongkaar Nirankaar carries two complementary energies drawn from Sikh spiritual tradition. Ongkaar refers to the Divine manifestation that is perceivable—the doer, the knowing and sensing that moves and acts on the physical plane. It is the divine presence we can recognize through action, breath, sound, and the visible world. Nirankaar is the counterpart: the divine manifestation that is imperceivable, unseen, and unknowable. It represents formlessness and the vast mystery beyond what the mind can grasp.

Snatam explains: "This mantra brings us into a place of balance between the known and the unknown." The power of chanting Ongkaar Nirankaar lies in holding both simultaneously—the tangible divine energy we experience moment to moment, and the infinite, shapeless divinity that transcends all form. Between these two polarities lies deep peace and stillness. Rather than resolving into one or the other, the mantra teaches the nervous system to rest in the paradox.

When and Why Use This Mantra?

According to the Sikh mantra tradition, Ongkaar Nirankaar is particularly suited for times of profound exhaustion or defeat—especially when every effort has been exhausted and hopelessness begins to set in. The mantra does not deny the difficulty; instead, it offers a doorway into acceptance and renewal. By tuning into the soul's prayer rather than the mind's anxious loop of solutions, the practitioner can arrive at a deep place of meditation, find inner tranquility, and access the acceptance needed to start anew.

Beyond its use for emotional and spiritual transition, the mantra also serves deep relaxation and healing work. The extended, streamlined arrangement Snatam has created—part of her Mantra and Meditation Series based on her album Nirankaar—is designed to facilitate both breath meditation and simple chanting. The serene, inviting quality of the recording creates a container for extended meditation practice.

How Does the Workshop Begin? The Opening Tuning-In

Snatam begins the workshop by setting the container and introducing the teaching lineage. She acknowledges both live participants on Zoom and future viewers watching the recording, creating an inclusive energetic space. She then orients participants to the Kirtan and Kundalini school she co-founded with her husband Sopurkh Singh, explaining the weekly offerings: her own Wednesday meditation class featuring mantra and breath work, Sopurkh's Tuesday and Thursday Kundalini Yoga classes and 40-day meditation practices, a Saturday acupressure and Kundalini yoga class, traditional Sikh sacred poetry teachings, and beginner and intermediate harmonium courses. This context matters because the workshop is not isolated instruction but an invitation into an ongoing community of practice.

Snatam dedicates the class to Coquilla Ravel, who is undergoing a transition, and extends the teaching to "all of us that are in the experience of transition in life." This dedication reframes the mantra as a tool for anyone navigating change, loss, or uncertainty.

The workshop formally begins with the Adi Mantra, the traditional opening chant of Kundalini Yoga: "Ong Namo Gurudev Namo." Snatam guides participants to sit with palms together at the center of the chest, thumbs resting at the sternum. She instructs: "Take some deep breaths into the base of your spine. Close the eyes and notice any thoughts, any fluttering energy of the past or the future, and just come into presence into being." This transition into stillness is not rushed; it is itself the beginning of the practice. After chanting the tuning-in mantra three times, participants then chant "Aad Gurena Jugaad Gurena," invoking primal wisdom and the eternal guru principle. Only after this grounding do they move into the physical practice.

What Is the Role of Breath Work and Listening?

Snatam emphasizes that "today is really about listening, coming into a place of deep listening." This is not incidental to the practice—it is the practice. Rather than forcing the body through poses or demanding perfect execution, she invites participants to "come back to your breath so not everybody will be practicing yoga, some people will be just resting and observing." The goal is a quiet mind, both during the class and, metaphorically, "at the end of the day" and "at the end of life."

Breath work becomes the anchor. As participants perform gentle warm-up poses—spinal rotations, forward folds with each leg extended—Snatam guides them to "tune into the mantra that's playing in the background." The mantra is not merely a sound object; it is a container that holds the quality of consciousness the practice aims to cultivate. She asks: "What is your soul's prayer?" This reframes the session away from achievement toward receptivity. The soul's prayer is not the prayer of the thinking mind or of personal desire but something deeper, older, and wiser than the individual ego.

The Yoga Warm-Up as Spiritual Practice

The yoga portion is methodical and accessible. Participants circle the spine, inhaling forward and exhaling back, creating mobility in the pelvis. Then, with the right leg extended and the left foot tucked into the right thigh, they fold forward repeatedly, linking breath to movement: inhale up, exhale down. Snatam offers an invitation while they move: "With each breath, come into the energy of forgiveness—forgiving yourself, forgiving anyone that has said something or done something that you struggled with in any way. Let that go."

This is important. The physical practice becomes a metaphor and a real vehicle for emotional release. The repeating fold is not mere exercise; it is a method of consciously releasing held tension and grievance from the nervous system. Snatam then guides participants through a standing forward fold and a lunging sequence involving breath of fire—a rapid, rhythmic nasal breathing technique distinct from ordinary respiration.

In the lunges, Snatam offers modifications: "You can bring the right knee down to the ground if you feel that you need to." She models how Sopurkh (who is present, demonstrating) modifies the pose. This accessibility is crucial; the practice is not about pushing the body into an ideal shape but about meeting oneself where one is.

What Is Breath of Fire and How Does It Prepare the Mind?

Breath of fire is a signature Kundalini Yoga technique. Snatam describes it: "It's much like panting like a dog, but the panting the mouth is open but this time we're closing the mouth and that same action we're doing with the mouth closed, the breath passing through the nose." The result is a rapid, rhythmic breathing pattern—in through the nose, out through the nose, mouth closed—that activates the nervous system and clears stagnant energy from the body.

The breath of fire is performed in the lunges for several rounds, then practitioners are guided to bring the right knee down and fold the torso over the left thigh, bringing the forehead to the ground with arms by the sides, palms facing up. Snatam directs attention to the third eye point, the space between the eyebrows: "This is the seed of intuition and a great place to tune into the energy of the soul as well." After the physical exertion of breath of fire, the body receives the counter-pose—stillness, inversion, and the cooling breath of nose breathing without the fire. The contrast teaches the nervous system flexibility; it learns to move between activation and rest.

Transition Into Meditation and Chanting

After completing both lunges and moving through a series of standing poses that open the chest and align the spine, Snatam guides participants to "come directly into our meditative chanting practice." She offers instruction in sat kriya, a signature Kundalini Yoga meditation pose: sitting upright on the knees with arms stretched overhead, hands clasped with index fingers pointing up. As participants chant "Sat Nam" (truth is my name, or the vibration of truth), they pump the navel point inward with each "Sat" and relax on the "Nam."

The sat kriya is performed for an extended period. Snatam explains: "Really the practice is just to keep going, keep the rhythm, keep the breath." The instruction is minimalist—no visualization instructions, no fantasy of transformation. Just the repetition of sound, breath, and movement. After the active chanting, participants inhale, hold the breath, and exhale, resting in the silence. Snatam notes: "And then transition, just expanding that silence."

How Does the Deep Meditation Work?

Following sat kriya, participants settle into a still, seated position and begin the extended chanting of Ongkaar Nirankaar itself. The structure is simple: continuous chanting of the mantra to the recorded melody, with breath and sound becoming one. Long stretches of the recording contain silence and music without instruction—Snatam has intentionally created space for unguided meditation within the held container of the mantra's frequency.

Late in the workshop, Snatam offers subtle guidance during the meditation: "In this earthly realm, this earthly plane, I feel like this is the internal... " The thought trails into silence. She does not impose meaning but invites practitioners to discover their own relationship with the mantra's energy. The point is not intellectual understanding but direct resonance—the body and nervous system learning the frequency of Ongkaar Nirankaar through sustained exposure and breath.

The mantra's power, as the Sikh tradition understands it, is that it recalibrates the being toward acceptance of what is perceivable and what is not, toward the soul's prayer rather than the ego's demands, and toward the still point between doing and being.

What Happens After the Meditation Ends?

The workshop does not end with a sudden return to ordinary consciousness. After the extended chanting, Snatam brings participants back gradually. She may guide gentle neck rolls—turning the head to the right as one exhales, breathing into the right ear, then switching to the left. The cheek may rest on one side or both, allowing the flower-like quality of the asana to open the heart. These final poses are a descent, not an ascent; they prepare the body to transition from the deepened state into ordinary activity.

Snatam typically offers a few final moments of breath and stillness before gently bringing the practice to a close. The quality of ending—gentle, unhurried, honoring the silence—is as important as the beginning.

Where to Go From Here

For those drawn to this work, several paths are available. Snatam's recorded album Nirankaar contains the full-length versions of this and other mantras, suitable for home practice. The streamlined Mantra and Meditation Series versions are explicitly designed for extended personal chanting and listening meditation. Those seeking ongoing instruction and community can join Kirtan and Kundalini, the online school, where Snatam teaches weekly Wednesday classes and offers additional courses in harmonium and mantra. The practice of Ongkaar Nirankaar need not be a one-time experience; it can become a recurring touchstone during times of transition, grief, exhaustion, or simply the need to return to the soul's prayer. The mantra's value increases with repetition, as the nervous system gradually learns to recognize and trust the frequency it carries.

[3:48] manifestation

[3:51] the manifestation of the divine

[3:58] namo i bow to that guru dev

[4:02] divine

[4:03] teacher namo i bow

[4:05] so we'll chant that three times and then

[4:08] we'll chant aad gurena

[4:10] jugaad gurena

[4:12] sat

[4:17] primal wisdom i bow throughout the ages

[4:19] to that wisdom i bow

[4:22] true divine wisdom i bow and great

[4:24] divine wisdom i vow

[4:27] so please bring your palms together at

[4:29] the center of the chest

[4:32] thumbs will be resting at the sternum

[4:35] and take some deep breaths into the base

[4:37] of your spine

[4:42] you can go ahead and close the eyes

[4:45] and notice any thoughts that you may

[4:47] have

[4:48] any fluttering energy

[4:53] of the past or the future

[4:56] and

[4:57] just

[4:58] take a deep breath inhale

[5:01] exhale

[5:02] come into presence into being

[5:06] and let's inhale to

[5:09] tune in and healthy

[5:20] [Music]

[5:34] oh

[5:39] oh

[5:45] now

[5:52] good

[5:54] day

[5:59] now

[6:00] [Music]

[6:06] oh

[6:12] [Music]

[6:21] day

[6:22] [Music]

[6:27] now

[6:28] [Music]

[6:37] is

[6:39] [Music]

[7:00] is

[7:17] okay

[7:24] i was kind of lost in the silence there

[7:26] for a moment

[7:28] that was nice

[7:31] well

[7:33] let's begin we're going to do a little

[7:35] bit of yoga to warm up

[7:38] um

[7:39] today

[7:41] is really about

[7:43] listening coming into a place of deep

[7:45] listening

[7:47] so i do invite you to

[7:52] um

[7:54] yeah kind of take that opportunity while

[7:56] we're doing the yoga practice

[8:01] and to

[8:02] come back to your breath so not

[8:04] everybody

[8:05] will be practicing yoga some people will

[8:08] be

[8:08] just resting and observing

[8:11] so come back into your practice

[8:15] of breath

[8:17] and

[8:18] of

[8:20] a quiet mind

[8:23] so

[8:24] that's kind of really the end result

[8:28] is a quiet mind at the end of the day so

[8:30] it's kind of simple at the end of this

[8:32] class

[8:33] but then also at the end of the day too

[8:35] at the end of life

[8:38] that we can come to a quiet

[8:42] mind

[8:44] so

[8:44] sitting in easy pose hands will be on

[8:47] the knees

[8:48] let's begin to

[8:50] circle this

[8:51] spine rotating the pelvis

[8:53] so we're going to inhale forward

[8:57] and exhale back

[9:40] and please go ahead and switch

[9:41] directions

[10:20] all right and then please inhale in the

[10:23] center take a nice deep breath into the

[10:25] base of your spine

[10:28] and exhale

[10:34] and now let's stretch the right leg out

[10:37] and then place the left foot into the

[10:39] right thigh

[10:41] and reach for your knees your shins or

[10:43] your toes

[10:45] and

[10:48] allow this to be your up position then

[10:50] exhale bring the torso down towards the

[10:52] knee

[10:54] inhaling up exhaling down

[11:18] inhaling up exhaling down

[11:28] [Music]

[11:54] as you're moving and breathing

[11:56] [Music]

[11:57] you can kind of tune into this mantra

[11:59] that's playing in the background

[12:01] [Music]

[12:03] the purpose of this mantra

[12:06] i feel is to tune into

[12:08] the soul's prayer

[12:13] [Music]

[12:14] not the prayer of the mind not our

[12:16] desires but just

[12:18] the soul's prayer

[12:22] so invite you to do that to inquire

[12:27] what your soul's prayer is

[12:34] [Music]

[12:59] [Music]

[13:03] is

[13:07] and let's inhale in the upper position

[13:10] exhale down

[13:13] and stretch

[13:19] and come on up

[13:21] and switch legs so now you're going to

[13:23] extend your left leg out

[13:27] and right foot will go into

[13:30] the left thigh

[13:31] inhaling up exhaling down

[13:41] [Music]

[13:54] and with each breath

[13:56] you can

[13:59] also

[14:02] come into the energy of forgiveness

[14:06] forgiving yourself

[14:08] forgiving anyone

[14:12] that

[14:14] has said something or done something

[14:16] that

[14:17] you struggled with in any way

[14:20] let's

[14:20] practice just

[14:22] letting that go

[14:24] [Music]

[14:28] coming into the souls

[14:30] [Music]

[14:31] zone and prayer and vibration

[14:35] [Music]

[14:46] [Music]

[14:52] [Music]

[15:03] [Music]

[15:13] and now

[15:14] inhale come on up

[15:17] exhale stretch down

[15:20] [Music]

[15:31] all right

[15:32] and come on up

[15:35] and

[15:36] now if you will

[15:38] come to the edge of your mat you're

[15:40] going to

[15:43] just

[15:43] stand at the top of your mat the top

[15:46] edge would be great

[15:53] [Music]

[16:09] [Music]

[16:15] [Music]

[16:16] all right

[16:18] now if you will please stretch both arms

[16:21] up

[16:24] and inhale

[16:25] [Music]

[16:26] reach the arms up

[16:28] and go back a little bit nice stretch

[16:32] and then exhale gently bring the arms

[16:34] down towards the toes

[16:42] and let's just take a few moments to

[16:44] breathe there

[16:47] now

[16:48] i'm going to

[16:49] bend the knees

[16:51] and lunge the right leg back

[16:56] so bending the left knee lunging the

[16:58] right leg back

[17:00] and

[17:01] you're going to be in this position

[17:04] for just a little bit with long deep

[17:06] breathing

[17:14] long deep breathing

[17:19] [Music]

[17:21] if you need to

[17:22] you can

[17:23] bring the right knee down to the ground

[17:28] if you feel that you need to

[17:30] so perk is just demonstrated that

[17:37] [Music]

[17:39] so there's the modification

[17:40] [Music]

[17:48] wonderful and begin a rapid breath of

[17:51] fire here we go

[17:53] breath of fire is a rapid breath through

[17:55] the nose

[18:01] and it's much like panting like a dog

[18:04] but with the panting

[18:08] the mouth is open but this time we're

[18:09] closing the mouth

[18:12] and that same action we're doing with

[18:14] the mouth closed the breath passing

[18:17] through the nose

[18:21] [Music]

[18:27] [Music]

[18:37] i

[18:43] [Music]

[18:55] okay wonderful please inhale

[18:59] hold the breath in briefly

[19:01] [Music]

[19:04] and exhale

[19:06] gently bring the right knee down and

[19:09] bring the left knee to the ground

[19:12] folding your torso over the left thigh

[19:15] and then you might have to kind of scoot

[19:17] back a little bit you're going to bring

[19:19] your forehead to the ground

[19:21] and arms will be to the sides

[19:25] palms facing up

[19:27] and you're just going to breathe in this

[19:28] position

[19:31] [Music]

[19:36] it's a great opportunity to

[19:39] tune into the third eye point that's the

[19:41] point between the eyebrows

[19:44] the seed of intuition

[19:50] [Music]

[19:53] and certainly this is

[19:57] a great place to tune into the energy of

[19:59] the soul as well

[20:04] [Music]

[20:19] [Music]

[20:30] is

[20:34] [Music]

[20:46] i

[20:55] [Music]

[21:01] oh

[21:03] and inhale please

[21:06] exhale

[21:08] bring in your hands by your shoulders

[21:11] let's push up

[21:13] kind of a modified cobra pose stretch

[21:15] the arms back

[21:17] and then switch sides

[21:20] so now you're going to

[21:22] have the right

[21:24] leg forward and the left leg is lunged

[21:27] back

[21:29] and you're gonna begin with just a long

[21:31] deep breath

[21:32] [Music]

[21:34] long deep breath here

[21:38] remembering that you can put the left

[21:40] knee down if you need to

[21:43] [Music]

[21:49] and it can be a tendency to tighten the

[21:52] shoulders a bit

[21:53] and kind of

[21:55] push forward

[21:58] so

[21:59] if you can relate to

[22:01] the base of the spine bringing the

[22:03] energy back to the base of the spine and

[22:06] relax the shoulders

[22:08] even gently pulling them back a little

[22:11] bit

[22:13] and open the chest a bit

[22:19] and begin a breath of fire rapid breath

[22:21] through the nose here we go

[22:25] [Music]

[22:31] [Music]

[22:46] [Music]

[22:52] [Music]

[23:06] oh

[23:08] [Music]

[23:19] [Music]

[23:26] beautifully done please inhale

[23:30] hold the breath

[23:33] and exhale bring the left knee down and

[23:36] the right knee folding the right foot

[23:38] under the torso

[23:40] bringing the forehead to the ground

[23:42] arms are by your thighs palms facing up

[23:47] breathe into the third eye

[23:53] [Music]

[24:09] [Music]

[24:22] uh

[24:29] [Music]

[24:37] [Music]

[24:44] and allow the breath to slow down

[24:48] [Music]

[24:50] take a little bit of extra time

[24:53] expanding especially the inhale

[24:59] [Music]

[25:04] [Music]

[25:12] and from that nice full place of inhale

[25:15] you can allow the exhale to fall

[25:18] like a waterfall

[25:20] [Music]

[25:31] [Music]

[25:33] and let's inhale together

[25:37] exhale

[25:39] bring in the hands by the shoulders

[25:41] gently push the spine up into a modified

[25:44] cobra stretching the shoulders back

[25:46] momentarily

[25:47] [Music]

[25:49] and then transition

[25:52] to please coming to a standing position

[26:01] and

[26:04] now you're going to just gently fold the

[26:06] torso

[26:07] forward bringing the head and the weight

[26:10] of the hands down towards the floor and

[26:13] i like to just

[26:14] allow the weight of my head

[26:17] and hands to

[26:19] hang

[26:20] or you can have your hands on the floor

[26:25] and coming back to the breath

[26:30] [Music]

[26:32] again

[26:34] emphasizing the inhale

[26:37] expanding that

[26:39] elongating that

[26:41] [Music]

[26:45] it's one area where we often don't give

[26:47] ourselves enough is that inhale

[26:50] so take a nice expansive inhale

[26:55] and then with the fullness of the breath

[26:57] that has been brought in allow it to

[26:59] cascade out like a waterfall

[27:04] nice long deep breathing

[27:06] feeling the weight of your head hanging

[27:07] down in your

[27:11] [Music]

[27:17] [Music]

[27:19] arms uh

[27:32] [Music]

[27:43] [Music]

[27:50] [Music]

[28:00] and please inhale in this position

[28:04] exhale

[28:06] and inhale gently roll the spine up

[28:09] vertebrae by vertebrae

[28:14] allowing the feet to be shoulder-width

[28:16] apart

[28:18] let's

[28:20] fold the fingers into the mounds of the

[28:22] hands bring your arms parallel to the

[28:25] ground

[28:26] and then raise them up just 30 degrees

[28:30] close the eyes focus on that third eye

[28:33] point

[28:34] and breathe long and deep

[28:39] [Music]

[28:54] [Music]

[29:00] [Music]

[29:08] [Music]

[29:23] [Music]

[29:36] and i invite you to consciously bring

[29:38] energy into the heart center

[29:45] [Music]

[29:47] and feel the expansion at the third eye

[29:50] point as you focus there

[29:56] [Music]

[30:09] and please inhale in this position

[30:14] and bring the thumbs together over the

[30:16] top

[30:18] when they touch stretch the arms up

[30:21] and then exhale sweep the arms down the

[30:24] sides

[30:30] beautiful

[30:34] take some moments to listen and breathe

[30:50] [Music]

[30:54] and now let's transition

[30:57] into downward dog

[31:00] so

[31:04] can

[31:07] start off on your hands and knees as

[31:08] soon as doing and then raise the

[31:11] buttocks up

[31:13] and gently pushing the palms in the

[31:17] feet into the ground

[31:22] taking the pressure off of the lower

[31:24] back

[31:24] relaxing the shoulders as best as you

[31:27] can

[31:28] breathe

[31:36] [Music]

[31:41] [Music]

[31:57] [Music]

[32:10] i'm coming back

[32:12] even in this physical posture

[32:16] to the soul's prayer

[32:19] the soul's vibrations

[32:25] [Music]

[32:30] we can have so many roles in this life

[32:39] now let's just

[32:41] relax into

[32:45] the role of holding this posture

[32:48] [Music]

[32:53] and letting go of identity

[32:57] just into the energy of the soul which

[32:59] is

[33:00] presence

[33:02] inhale deeply

[33:06] exhale

[33:08] bring the knees down to the ground

[33:13] and then transition

[33:15] to

[33:16] being on your belly

[33:19] we're gonna

[33:20] eventually come into cobra pose

[33:32] [Music]

[33:37] bringing the hands by the shoulders

[33:43] let's gently find her way up into cobra

[33:45] pose

[33:47] gently pushing yourself up into cobra

[33:49] pose

[33:53] [Music]

[33:55] you can also

[33:56] rest

[33:57] your hand your forearms on the ground

[34:05] and just breathe

[34:28] you'll be doing a lot of breathing and

[34:31] listening today

[34:33] so i invite you to come back into your

[34:34] breath

[34:36] come back into presence and

[34:39] emptiness really

[35:06] all right

[35:07] and now please gently

[35:09] turn the head to the left as you inhale

[35:11] [Music]

[35:13] turn the head to the right as you exhale

[35:18] and continue in this fashion

[35:20] moving at your own pace

[35:54] i'd like for you to inhale now in the

[35:56] center

[36:00] keeping the posture exhale

[36:04] inhale once again

[36:07] and exhale completely

[36:10] and now we're going to apply mole bund

[36:12] which is basically pulling up on the

[36:14] pelvic floor

[36:17] locking in the energy for a moment

[36:19] bring the chin in towards the chest

[36:32] and inhale

[36:34] and gently lower back down onto your

[36:38] belly for a moment

[36:46] you can put one cheek to the side

[36:50] for this just brief

[36:52] little relax

[37:24] and let's bring the hands by the

[37:25] shoulders

[37:27] and we're going to

[37:30] push the buttocks towards the heels

[37:34] reach the arms forward

[37:37] and stretching the lower back out for a

[37:39] moment

[37:40] forehead to the ground

[37:47] and

[37:48] then

[37:50] come sitting on the heels please

[37:57] and you're going to

[37:59] spread the knees

[38:01] a little ways away

[38:02] from each other

[38:06] and um

[38:09] kind of i guess a medium point from if

[38:12] you had your your knees spread apart

[38:14] very very very part or

[38:17] kind of a

[38:18] central point

[38:20] middle point

[38:22] so

[38:23] now we're going to do

[38:25] is inhale come standing up on those

[38:28] beautiful knees and stretch the arms out

[38:31] like a flower and reach the hands up and

[38:35] the spine back this is your inhale

[38:38] exhale bring the forehead to the ground

[38:41] palms forward

[38:43] and

[38:45] then

[38:47] that's your exhale and then come

[38:49] inhaling

[38:51] back up again stretch up

[38:54] and exhale

[38:55] down

[38:58] and continue like this

[39:04] just for a

[39:05] little brief

[39:07] time here

[39:09] about a minute and a half

[39:12] this is one of my all-time favorite

[39:13] exercises because i love the stretch

[39:17] and i love the feeling of opening up in

[39:20] this way it feels like a flower opening

[39:23] to the sun

[39:24] i just love that analogy so i invite you

[39:28] as you come up

[39:30] to open yourself like a flower

[39:33] to the energy of the universe

[39:37] bringing it in through the hands into

[39:39] the heart

[39:41] and then as you come down bowing and

[39:45] giving yourself totally

[39:48] to the divine to this flow of life

[39:52] to the flow of the universe

[39:58] and that's really what the inhale is

[40:00] is bringing in this

[40:02] life force energy

[40:04] and then the exhale is bowing

[40:18] just a few more times here

[40:32] all right then inhale stretch up

[40:37] and exhale

[40:39] now just come sitting back onto the

[40:42] heels but this time now bring the

[40:45] knees together as best as you can

[40:48] now some people may need to modify and

[40:50] you can do that with pillows and

[40:53] all sorts of things

[40:55] but for now

[40:56] please bring your hands at the small of

[40:59] the back and they're going to come into

[41:01] venus lock

[41:02] so i'll demonstrate what that looks like

[41:04] here

[41:07] right thumb can be over left to access

[41:09] male energy

[41:11] left thumb over right to access feel my

[41:13] energy

[41:14] and then what you're going to do

[41:17] is from this position

[41:19] gently bend down bringing the forehead

[41:21] as close to the ground as possible

[41:23] and

[41:25] lift the arms up as high as they can

[41:27] comfortably go

[41:29] and breathe in this position

[41:31] now if you notice a pressure on the

[41:34] forehead this is

[41:37] the purpose of this exercise

[41:40] is to bring blood flow

[41:42] to the third eye point

[41:45] to

[41:46] this area

[41:47] the seat of intuition

[41:52] and holding the arms up is challenging i

[41:55] want to invite you to do your best

[41:58] we'll be here for

[41:59] just one more minute and of course if

[42:03] you need to take a break you can or

[42:06] if you can't bring your forehead all the

[42:07] way to the ground you can prop your

[42:10] forehead up on a couch say

[42:13] or some pillows

[42:21] long deep breathing in this position

[42:23] please

[43:01] and please inhale in this position

[43:05] and exhale

[43:07] bringing the arms down to the small of

[43:10] the back

[43:11] gently roll on up

[43:14] come sitting in easy pose

[43:17] and please find yourself into a

[43:19] meditative posture we're going to

[43:22] meditate here

[43:24] so

[43:25] if you need to

[43:29] get a sitting pillow

[43:30] or

[43:32] if it's more comfortable for you to sit

[43:34] on a chair you can go ahead and do that

[43:39] but we're going to

[43:41] utilize all of this meditative energy

[43:44] from the yoga set

[43:45] and come directly into our meditative

[43:47] posture

[43:49] so we're going to practice

[43:51] this buddha's mudra

[43:54] left hand is on your lap

[43:56] right hand over

[43:57] and allow the thumb tips to touch

[44:01] hands will be gently resting in the lap

[44:05] and

[44:07] what we're going to do is

[44:09] continue the practice of long deep

[44:11] breathing

[44:12] in this posture

[44:14] so

[44:16] we want to

[44:17] completely empty the mind

[44:20] come to a nice beautiful still point

[44:23] with the mind

[44:25] so i'm going to put on this on

[44:30] this

[44:32] this

[44:34] mantra

[44:36] and invite you to

[44:37] breathe along with it

[44:40] so with one

[44:42] cycle

[44:43] of the month row we're going to take a

[44:45] nice long inhale

[44:48] and then with the next cycle of the

[44:51] mantra then that will be your exhale

[44:54] and you'll continue like that

[44:56] you'll be inhaling

[44:58] with the next cycle

[45:01] and then exhaling with the next cycle

[45:04] we're just going to go to really steady

[45:06] pace

[45:07] like this

[45:09] and keeping our focus on the mantra and

[45:12] our breath

[45:14] and at a certain point as we're

[45:16] breathings we'll do this for about 11

[45:18] minutes

[45:19] you may find that you can go through two

[45:21] cycles of the mantra on an inhale and

[45:23] two cycles of a mantra

[45:26] on the exhale

[45:28] so i'm going to go ahead and put the

[45:30] music on

[45:34] and really the practice is just to

[45:36] be in the breath

[45:38] and

[45:39] relax the mind let go of thoughts just

[45:42] be in the breath and the mantra

[45:45] you could focus the eyes at the third

[45:47] eye point

[45:50] and it'll be

[45:51] you know be a lot for you to focus on

[45:54] just

[45:55] maintaining the breath pattern and

[46:00] listening to the mantra

[46:03] so that's good we want

[46:06] the mind to let go

[46:09] and let god

[46:19] so here we are inhaling

[46:21] [Music]

[46:26] and then you're gonna exhale

[46:28] [Music]

[46:34] and then inhale

[46:38] [Music]

[46:43] and then exhale

[46:45] [Music]

[46:50] and continue with this breath

[46:54] [Music]

[47:12] [Music]

[47:35] foreign

[47:38] [Music]

[47:46] [Music]

[47:56] [Music]

[48:20] [Music]

[48:54] [Music]

[49:02] [Music]

[49:15] foreign

[49:17] um

[49:19] [Music]

[49:28] [Music]

[49:34] foreign

[49:36] [Music]

[50:02] [Music]

[50:10] [Music]

[50:14] and perhaps expand the breath now

[50:17] [Music]

[50:20] doing two cycles of the month row for

[50:22] the inhale and two cycles

[50:27] [Music]

[50:36] [Music]

[51:10] [Music]

[51:18] [Music]

[51:28] miranda

[51:31] [Music]

[51:44] [Music]

[51:52] [Music]

[52:26] [Music]

[52:43] [Music]

[52:46] i

[52:52] [Music]

[53:00] [Music]

[53:17] [Music]

[53:26] [Music]

[53:31] foreign

[53:34] [Music]

[53:55] foreign

[54:00] [Music]

[54:10] [Music]

[54:14] um

[54:17] [Music]

[54:29] coming back to the breath

[54:32] time and time again

[54:34] [Music]

[54:39] foreign

[54:42] [Music]

[54:57] foreign

[54:59] [Music]

[55:08] [Music]

[55:28] foreign

[55:29] [Music]

[55:52] [Music]

[56:16] [Music]

[56:21] foreign

[56:24] [Music]

[56:48] and for the last few

[56:50] moments

[56:52] at the end of your exhale

[56:54] [Music]

[56:55] suspend the breath out for a little bit

[56:59] and then and at the end likewise at the

[57:01] end of the inhale suspend the breath

[57:05] for just a moment

[57:09] [Music]

[57:14] [Music]

[57:24] [Music]

[57:29] foreign

[57:32] [Music]

[57:40] and now wherever you are

[57:43] please inhale deeply

[57:48] and hold this breath

[57:55] hold the breath

[58:14] and exhale

[58:20] and now

[58:22] we'll chant the mantra you can maintain

[58:25] this posture

[58:27] unless of course you're playing tableau

[58:29] with me

[58:33] and

[58:34] we'll chant the month from now

[58:57] and here are the words

[59:01] [Music]

[59:02] god is the

[59:05] doer the divine doer

[59:07] ong

[59:08] how the divine manifests

[59:11] in this earthly realm this earthly plain

[59:14] on god the divine

[59:17] manifesting and doing

[59:19] in this earthly plane

[59:24] near without

[59:27] without that obvious manifestation to

[59:30] the

[59:31] earth plane

[59:34] the unknown

[59:37] god

[59:38] is still doing

[59:40] so that which we can perceive is doing

[59:43] that which we cannot

[59:45] perceive is doing that which exists is

[59:48] doing that which does not exist is doing

[59:53] we chant nid and kar twice

[59:57] i feel like this is the internal

[1:00:01] workings of the mantra we churn and

[1:00:04] vibrate nirankar twice within us

[1:00:08] and then ong we come back to

[1:00:12] the divine manifestation of aung

[1:00:15] so cycling between the known and the

[1:00:18] unknown

[1:00:20] we can find our still point

[1:00:24] our place of presence

[1:00:28] so hands will be in the buddha mudra

[1:00:31] continuing and will chant

[1:01:05] [Music]

[1:01:13] um

[1:01:24] [Music]

[1:01:41] um

[1:01:43] [Music]

[1:02:15] foreign

[1:02:21] [Music]

[1:02:23] oh

[1:02:24] [Music]

[1:02:35] oh

[1:02:36] [Music]

[1:02:53] um

[1:02:57] [Music]

[1:04:00] god

[1:04:02] [Music]

[1:04:38] oh

[1:04:40] [Music]

[1:04:51] oh

[1:04:52] [Music]

[1:05:26] oh

[1:05:30] [Music]

[1:06:00] oh

[1:06:09] oh

[1:06:54] [Music]

[1:07:26] oh

[1:08:48] [Music]

[1:09:06] the

[1:09:07] [Music]

[1:09:09] [Applause]

[1:09:15] [Music]

[1:09:33] me

[1:09:36] [Music]

[1:10:12] oh

[1:10:15] [Music]

[1:10:18] [Applause]

[1:10:22] [Music]

[1:10:32] god

[1:10:33] [Music]

[1:10:51] oh

[1:10:56] [Music]

[1:11:09] [Music]

[1:11:11] oh god

[1:11:14] [Music]

[1:11:39] god

[1:11:42] [Music]

[1:11:49] [Music]

[1:11:54] [Applause]

[1:11:57] miranda

[1:11:59] [Music]

[1:12:21] god

[1:12:22] [Music]

[1:12:40] [Music]

[1:12:47] [Music]

[1:13:00] oh

[1:13:04] [Music]

[1:13:08] oh
