This live satsang session combines devotional chanting (kirtan), sacred mantras including the Mahamantra, and guided meditation to create a collective spiritual experience. The session emphasizes mantra as a tool for happiness and spiritual elevation, especially within the context of Kali Yoga (the current age), and introduces the Gayatri Sangha—an online spiritual community designed to deepen regular practice and create sustained connection among practitioners.

What Is a Satsang Meditation Experience?

A satsang is a Sanskrit term meaning "gathering in truth." In this session, the space is held as a live communion—both for those physically present and for the online community tuning in. Deva Premal describes the mechanics simply: "as we come together we become a sangha... because we're connected and we are connected in spirit." The satsang format combines three core elements—devotional music (kirtan), mantric repetition, and silent meditation—to create an environment where individual practice becomes amplified through collective resonance.

The setting itself carries meaning. Deva shares her experience of singing in Slovenia, noting the geographical and familial connections—her father's history in that region—which illustrates how sacred spaces often hold layered significance beyond the immediate physical location. The practice of kirtan and mantra chanting is not meant to be a performance but rather an invitation for participants to join in the creation of sacred sound.

The Mahamantra: Why Chanting Creates Happiness

The Mahamantra—Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare / Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare—holds particular power within Vedic tradition. Deva references Prabhupada, the founder of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), who famously taught: "Chant and be happy." This is not mere philosophy but a direct prescription grounded in how the mantra works energetically and psychologically.

According to Vedic scriptures, the Mahamantra is specifically designed for Kali Yoga—the current age, characterized by material distraction and spiritual disconnection. The mantra's structure alternates between invocations of Hare (the divine feminine principle), Krishna (divine joy and love), and Rama (divine perfection and wholeness). When chanted, these names create a vibrational frequency that naturally elevates consciousness.

Deva notes a subtle but important detail about the mantra's history: "The original version of it actually started with Haram or starts with Haram in the scriptures and then Prabhupada turned it around to start with Har Krishna but it's all good." This illustrates how living traditions adapt while maintaining their essential power. The mantra's effectiveness does not depend on perfection of pronunciation but on sincere engagement with its meaning and resonance.

The Role of Kirtan in Opening the Heart

Beyond the formal chanting of mantras, kirtan—participatory call-and-response singing—serves as a gateway to emotional and spiritual opening. Throughout the session, several original compositions appear, including "Through the Eyes of an Angel," which carries imagery of pilgrimage, sacred rivers (the Ganges), and self-recognition: "I'm seeing myself like I never did before / I'm seeing myself through the eyes of an angel."

This song illustrates a core teaching embedded in kirtan practice: through devotional singing, the ego-self begins to dissolve, and one starts to perceive reality from a more spacious, awakened perspective. The repeated imagery of sacred landscapes—the Ganges River, ancient banyan trees, mountain valleys—anchors the listener in archetypal spaces of spiritual power, whether encountered internally through imagination or externally through travel.

Another piece, "Who Am I Now," poses the question directly: "Who is this fool who cannot sleep? / Thinking about wild flowers and rain showers and a love so impossibly sweet." The song documents the disorientation that occurs when the heart opens—when ordinary consciousness gives way to love and wonder. Rather than treating this as confusion to be solved, the kirtan holds it as a sacred state: "Once I was cool, now I'm a flame."

Mantras for Specific Intentions: Ganesh and Shiva

The session includes chanting of other sacred mantras beyond the Mahamantra, each associated with different dimensions of spiritual reality. The Ganesh mantra invokes the elephant-headed deity known as "the revealer of possibilities" and "the one who blesses the beginnings." In Hindu cosmology, Ganesh removes obstacles and opens pathways. Invoking Ganesh at the start of spiritual practice—or any important undertaking—creates an energetic alignment with clarity and the removal of blocks.

The Shiva mantra, another traditional invocation, addresses the transcendent dimension of consciousness. Shiva represents pure awareness, the unmoving witness beyond all form. By chanting the names and forms of different deities, the practitioner is not worshipping separate beings but rather invoking different qualities and dimensions of consciousness already present within oneself.

This is a crucial point often misunderstood in Western spirituality: the mantras and deities in Hindu practice function as focal points for consciousness itself. They are technology, not mythology, designed to attune the mind and heart to specific frequencies of being.

The Meditation Space: Preparing Body and Mind

Before entering the deeper meditation portion of the satsang, Deva guides participants into physical and mental preparation: "Should we see if we can sit with our back straight? Our spine straight and relaxed shoulders. Just coming home." This simple instruction carries profound significance. The straight spine allows energy to flow freely through the central channel (the sushumna nadi in yogic anatomy). Relaxed shoulders indicate a release of held tension and defensiveness. The phrase "just coming home" suggests arriving in the present moment, the body, and the natural state of being.

The transition from active kirtan to silent meditation mirrors the broader spiritual journey: from engaging the emotions and intellect through devotional music, to settling into the vast silence beneath all sound and thought. Deva describes this shift: "I think we can enter our meditation space." The invitation is gentle, non-directive—each practitioner finds their own depth within the collective container.

The Gayatri Sangha: Creating Sustained Spiritual Community

A significant portion of the satsang is devoted to introducing the Gayatri Sangha—an online spiritual community and app designed to deepen individual practice through regular connection. Deva explains the distinction: "we are all it right now we are as we come together we become a sangha... there are some of us who just want to stay more connected and go deeper and and be more engaged and have a regular red thread."

The image of the "red thread" is drawn from Hindu tradition—it represents an unbroken continuity of practice and connection. While a single satsang session can be profound, sustained practice requires structure. The Gayatri Sangha provides this through regular meditations, teachings, and a community that meets weekly on Saturdays, as Deva emphasizes: "So really the red thread never... Saturday." This creates a weekly anchor point, a reliable moment of return to the spiritual path.

The app's icon—designed by Deva's father—carries the sign of the Gayatri mantra, the most sacred invocation in Hindu tradition. This personal touch—the use of her father's design—illustrates how spiritual lineage passes through generations and how technology can serve to preserve and transmit these teachings.

Why Mantra Chanting Works: The Science Behind the Practice

Mantra chanting is sometimes dismissed as mere repetition or superstition, but neuroscience and contemplative research now validate its effects. Chanting activates the parasympathetic nervous system (the "rest and digest" response), lowers cortisol levels, and creates coherence in brain wave patterns. The repetitive nature of mantra—especially when chanted aloud or in a group—produces measurable changes in heart rate variability and emotional regulation.

Beyond physiology, the Sanskrit itself is considered a precise language. Each sound (aksara) is believed to correspond to specific frequencies that attune consciousness to particular dimensions of reality. This is why accuracy of pronunciation matters in traditional practice, yet why Deva's reassurance—"it's all good"—also holds truth. The mantra's power rests primarily in sincere intention and consistent engagement, not in perfectionism.

Community Blessings and the Power of Naming

Near the close of the satsang, Deva reads aloud the names of community members—"the cat, Ariel, Ion, Iona, Dylan, Bruce, Chameleia, Marsha"—offering the blessing: "may your day be blessed. May your year..." This practice of naming individuals within a spiritual container serves multiple functions. It creates accountability and witness—the person knows they are held in community consciousness. It also distributes the energetic uplift generated through the kirtan and meditation to those in need, whether present or distant.

This is consistent with the principle that blessing and intention, when held in communion, have real effects. The mechanism remains partly mysterious, but the consistent testimony of spiritual practitioners across cultures suggests that collective prayer and blessing do transmit genuine support.

Where to Go From Here

If this satsang resonates, the natural next step is regular engagement. Explore the foundational mantras—the Mahamantra especially—through daily practice, even for 15 minutes. Notice how consistency matters more than duration. Join the Gayatri Sangha app to access regular guided meditations and to connect with the weekly Saturday satsang. Consider deepening your understanding by studying the Bhagavad Gita or other foundational Hindu texts that explain the philosophy behind these practices. Most importantly, do not treat mantra as intellectual knowledge to be mastered, but as a living technology to be inhabited through repeated, sincere engagement. The happiness that Prabhupada promised emerges not from understanding why chanting works, but from the direct experience of it.

[16:15] >> A little a little

[16:17] >> the sweet animal. Anyway, just uh it's

[16:20] really really been very nourishing being

[16:22] here in Slovenia and we've played here

[16:24] quite a few times and always feel a very

[16:27] special connection. Also, my father has

[16:31] um spent quite some time in in what was

[16:34] then called Yugoslavia and then over the

[16:36] years every year. So, he was very

[16:39] connected to Ulana and and Slovenia and

[16:42] this whole area of the world. So I

[16:44] always feel a little kind of connected

[16:48] >> kind of connected

[17:27] [Music]

[17:30] and this is so

[17:33] important and so

[17:38] happy. You know there's prabupad the

[17:42] founder of Iskan who said chant and be

[17:43] happy and it actually really does happen

[17:46] with this mantra especially in the

[17:49] scriptures it says this is the mantra

[17:51] for the kali yoga which we are

[17:53] definitely in and uh the original

[17:57] version of it actually started with

[17:59] haram or starts with haram in the

[18:01] scriptures and then praupa turned it

[18:03] around to start with har krishna

[33:39] Let your

[33:42] shine down.

[33:46] Let your

[33:49] shine down to the metro.

[33:52] [Music]

[33:54] Oh.

[35:43] Look at me

[35:45] [Music]

[35:47] with your

[35:49] sh.

[35:57] [Music]

[36:02] Oh.

[36:05] [Music]

[36:08] Oh.

[36:12] Oh,

[36:52] Oh.

[36:56] [Laughter]

[36:59] [Music]

[37:03] Oh,

[37:06] [Music]

[37:14] come.

[37:19] [Music]

[37:25] Let

[37:26] [Music]

[38:09] and push.

[38:30] [Music]

[38:32] And again.

[38:40] Again.

[38:48] [Music]

[38:55] [Music]

[39:06] sham.

[39:08] [Music]

[39:19] Oh,

[39:23] [Music]

[39:42] it's Jacob. Foreign

[39:50] [Music]

[40:01] [Music]

[40:06] speech. Foreign speech. Foreign speech.

[40:19] for

[40:22] [Music]

[40:30] your

[40:33] sh.

[40:39] [Music]

[41:24] [Music]

[41:32] And let's take a little moment to close

[41:34] our eyes. Should we

[41:41] see if we can sit with our back

[41:43] straight? Our

[41:47] spine straight

[41:54] and relaxed shoulders.

[42:09] Just coming home.

[42:32] God put

[42:35] for

[42:36] [Music]

[42:49] [Music]

[43:04] Foreign

[43:16] [Music]

[43:26] [Music]

[43:38] [Music]

[44:37] I think we can

[44:40] enter our meditation space.

[44:43] So I think most of you know that we have

[44:46] a online spiritual community online sana

[44:50] and basically we are all it right now we

[44:54] are as we come together we become a sana

[44:57] so we we because we're connected and we

[45:00] are connected in spirit and then there

[45:03] are some of us who just want to stay

[45:05] more connected and go deeper and and be

[45:08] more engaged and have a regular red

[45:11] thread and that we um we provide and we

[45:16] offer through our Gaia tree sa app that

[45:19] is an online community that has an app

[45:22] and I'm just so happy that the sign

[45:26] which is the the the

[45:28] sign or the uh icon for the app is the

[45:32] sign my father painted. So to have my

[45:34] father's sign on the phone is just very

[45:37] very very

[45:39] thrilling. I don't know. I don't know

[45:41] how he would have felt about that. Um I

[45:44] show you.

[45:46] Here it is. You see it? Here it is. Now

[45:51] I see. Yeah. So um

[45:53] >> Oh, we didn't see it. Hold it up a bit.

[45:56] >> Oh, that's that's enough.

[45:59] And um um

[46:02] and in the app we meet every Saturday

[46:04] like this. This is And we've been doing

[46:07] this for five years. So it's really a an

[46:09] a practice and it's it's a it's a

[46:14] commitment also you know there's many

[46:16] people who really come every Saturday

[46:17] and and you guys even come together when

[46:20] we are on the road and we um we just not

[46:23] just but we offer a replay of another

[46:26] Saturday. So really the red thread never

[46:28] breaks.

[46:30] And uh and in this community we have a

[46:33] lot of energy. We create a lot of love

[46:36] and connection that is that is

[46:38] potentially healing and that can help

[46:41] uplift people that are in need of a

[46:44] little extra energy or healing or

[46:46] attention or love like we all are. But

[46:49] there's some people reach out and say

[46:51] please put me on your magic list for

[46:54] this for this time. And then we can we

[46:57] can call out your name and we can all

[47:01] repeat it and send our love and our

[47:04] healing energies and intentions to that

[47:08] particular person in that moment. So

[47:11] that's what we're going to go on this

[47:13] little journey with now. We're going to

[47:16] invoke the prayer space with the

[47:18] savvisha mantra

[47:20] and then um then we'll read out the

[47:24] names and we're going to repeat them

[47:28] with a with an uplifting feeling with a

[47:30] smile in our hearts and with a sense of

[47:34] may the best happen to this particular

[47:38] soul in this time and um and may realize

[47:43] it's the best. I think that's always the

[47:45] most important and um and then we embark

[47:49] on a exploration of the mantra together

[47:52] just really long breaths to the end of

[47:55] the breath with the m sound and then we

[47:59] come to the gyatri mantra together

[48:02] and uh

[48:04] >> and then we'll just have some silence

[48:06] after the gay tree after the journey.

[48:09] >> Okay.

[48:11] So before we

[48:14] begin with these names, look

[48:16] incredible.

[48:18] These are all our beloveds. Thank you

[48:21] guys for reaching out.

[48:23] You know,

[48:25] it's what makes the app

[48:29] uh it gives it life, you know.

[48:36] Yeah.

[48:48] Just close our eyes.

[48:52] You take this time now for some

[48:54] meditation. You just relax your

[48:56] shoulders.

[49:03] Am I not loud enough?

[49:04] >> No, I just

[49:06] from the temple.

[49:07] >> Okay.

[49:10] Okay.

[1:10:05] If we can remember,

[1:10:22] I'm singing for peace on this earth.

[1:10:30] Oh, shanty.

[1:10:32] Oh

[1:10:34] Oh,

[1:10:39] I'm singing out for all I'm worth.

[1:10:44] [Music]

[1:10:47] I'm singing out for the wise men. I'm

[1:10:51] singing out for the fool.

[1:10:55] I'm singing out for the rebel child who

[1:10:59] was born to break the rules.

[1:11:04] I'm singing out for the refugee

[1:11:07] who hurt no one at all.

[1:11:15] [Music]

[1:11:19] Oh shanty.

[1:11:21] Oh shanty. Oh

[1:11:24] [Music]

[1:11:32] shanty.

[1:11:34] Oh shanty.

[1:11:36] Oh.

[1:11:39] [Music]

[1:11:41] Singing for peace, love and

[1:11:43] understanding.

[1:11:45] [Music]

[1:11:49] Om shante.

[1:11:51] Om shante.

[1:11:53] Oh,

[1:11:55] [Music]

[1:11:58] I'm singing out for the last tree

[1:12:01] standing.

[1:12:02] [Music]

[1:12:05] I'm singing out for the hungry children

[1:12:10] living out on the street.

[1:12:14] But I'm singing out for the gentle ones

[1:12:18] humanity

[1:12:19] calls me. And I'm singing out in the

[1:12:24] power of love that no force will ever

[1:12:29] defeat.

[1:12:31] [Music]

[1:12:36] [Music]

[1:12:38] Oh shanty.

[1:12:40] Oh shy.

[1:12:42] Oh

[1:12:46] [Music]

[1:12:51] shante. Oh shanty.

[1:12:55] Oh,

[1:12:57] [Music]

[1:13:01] I'm singing for a better world to come.

[1:13:06] A better world to come.

[1:13:10] Home shin day.

[1:13:13] Shiny.

[1:13:14] Oh,

[1:13:19] a better world

[1:13:22] for everyone.

[1:13:25] [Music]

[1:13:27] And I'm singing out for the traveler.

[1:13:30] Destination

[1:13:32] un

[1:13:35] setting sail in a dingy with his family.

[1:13:40] looking for a home.

[1:13:43] And I'm singing out for the broken

[1:13:47] hearted lover who can't sleep alone.

[1:13:55] Oh

[1:13:57] [Music]

[1:14:01] sh

[1:14:02] Oh sh

[1:14:05] Oh.

[1:14:13] Oh

[1:14:20] oh oh shanty.

[1:14:22] [Music]

[1:14:24] Oh shanty.

[1:14:29] Oh shanty.

[1:14:33] Oh shanty.

[1:14:38] Oh sh

[1:14:43] Oh sh.

[1:14:45] [Music]

[1:15:04] [Music]

[1:15:06] >> Thank you guys. Thank you for being with

[1:15:08] us. We had a really good time tonight.

[1:15:11] That was really nice.

[1:15:14] Thank you.

[1:15:16] >> Thank you. Thank you to our beloved

[1:15:18] friends here.

[1:15:19] >> Thank you. Thank you.

[1:15:21] >> Thank you.

[1:15:22] >> Thank you.

[1:15:24] >> And uh we will see you down the road.

[1:15:28] We're going to Basil, Switzerland

[1:15:30] tomorrow and we will be filming and

[1:15:33] creating uh 21 uh mantra

[1:15:38] kind of like a master class with the

[1:15:40] mantras. Dave is going to be filming and

[1:15:43] teaching us the uh

[1:15:45] >> you you you too.

[1:15:46] >> Yeah, I'll be I will be there and

[1:15:49] >> anyway, let's see.

[1:15:50] >> And and then we will be in England for

[1:15:54] the beginning of our tour.

[1:15:56] Yes. And if you can come to this to one

[1:15:59] of the gatherings on this Euro tour,

[1:16:02] don't miss it. It's so precious and it's

[1:16:04] really really very very important this

[1:16:06] time. So I'm sure that Lisa is going to

[1:16:09] put you're going to put the link maybe

[1:16:10] for tickets and uh yeah, just don't miss

[1:16:15] it. Anytime you could come together with

[1:16:17] with your friends or with a community to

[1:16:20] sing. Yeah.

[1:16:21] >> It's precious and don't miss it.

[1:16:24] And uh and then if you're even more

[1:16:26] adventurous, come to Costa Rica at the

[1:16:28] end of the year over over Christmas 20

[1:16:31] to 27th of December.

[1:16:34] >> It's that's nice.

[1:16:35] >> It's very nice.

[1:16:36] >> It's a nice time.

[1:16:37] >> And uh and if you're adventurous in a

[1:16:41] different way, come with us to Peru in

[1:16:42] in April next year in the Sacred Valley

[1:16:46] >> with Alberto Valdo and Marisella Nobles

[1:16:49] and the Ko shamans. And this is special

[1:16:52] because we don't do this. I I have a

[1:16:54] feeling this will be the last time. I

[1:16:56] know we've said this before, but this

[1:16:57] time I think it's more likely it will be

[1:17:00] the last time. So, um if you wanted to

The Mahamantra—Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare / Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare—is a sacred invocation designed specifically for Kali Yoga, the current age. According to the founder of ISKCON, Prabhupada, chanting this mantra directly generates happiness and spiritual elevation by attuning consciousness to divine frequencies of love and joy.
When practitioners gather in satsang (spiritual community), they form a collective field of resonance. As Deva explains, 'as we come together we become a sangha'—the combined intention and energy amplifies the individual's practice and deepens the meditation experience beyond what silence or solitary chanting can achieve.
Yes. Mantra chanting activates the parasympathetic nervous system, lowers cortisol, and creates coherence in brain waves. The rhythmic repetition of Sanskrit sounds, especially in group settings, produces measurable effects on heart rate variability and emotional regulation that persist beyond the meditation session.
The Gayatri Sangha is an online spiritual community and app that provides regular guided meditations and weekly satsang gatherings (held on Saturdays) for those who wish to deepen their practice beyond occasional sessions. While not required, it creates continuity and the 'red thread' of sustained spiritual engagement.
Deva is referring to the fact that whenever people gather with sincere intention, they automatically form a sangha—a spiritual community—regardless of whether they have formally joined a group. However, those who commit to the Gayatri Sangha create regular structure that keeps them more deeply connected and engaged.
In Hindu practice, deities like Krishna, Rama, Shiva, and Ganesh function primarily as focal points for dimensions of consciousness rather than separate beings. Ganesh, for example, represents the removal of obstacles, while Shiva represents pure awareness. Invoking these names attunes the practitioner's consciousness to these specific qualities and frequencies.
While traditional practice values accuracy, sincere intention and consistent engagement matter most. Deva notes that even slight variations in mantra versions 'it's all good'—what matters is the heart's devotion and the willingness to repeat the mantra regularly, which produces the promised happiness and spiritual effect.
Kirtan is participatory call-and-response devotional singing that opens the heart through melody and emotion, often featuring original or traditional songs. Mantra meditation focuses on repetition of sacred names or sounds for consciousness attunement. Satsang typically combines both—kirtan to open the heart, followed by mantra chanting and silent meditation to deepen the inner journey.
