Activate Every Cell Through MindfulPractice and Unified Consciousness

Thich Nhat Hanh
Thich Nhat Hanh
Nov 2, 2018
11 Min. Lesezeit

Thich Nhat Hanh's 2005 dharma talk explains how practitioners activate every cell in their body through mindful walking and sitting meditation, using the energy of mindfulness to create a unified state of being where mind and body function in complete harmony. This cellular activation transforms meditation from an intellectual exercise into a direct experience of embodied consciousness, touching what he calls the "Pure Land" or ultimate dimension of reality. The teaching emphasizes that enlightenment is not separate from the body, but emerges when all cells "sing in unison" under the influence of mindfulness and concentration.

What Does It Mean to "Turn On Every Cell" in Your Body?

Thich Nhat Hanh uses the metaphor of electricity to describe how mindfulness activates the entire physical organism. When you practice walking meditation, you are not merely moving your feet while your mind wanders elsewhere. Instead, you bring your awareness down to the level of the soles of your feet, establishing a direct connection between mind and body. As Thay explains in the opening minutes of the talk, "You have to walk with your feet. You should work with your mind. If you work with your mind, you get lost."

The activation happens through the energy of mindfulness itself. When you generate this energy through conscious breathing and attention, it acts like electricity turning on all the lamps in a house. Each cell in your body—including those beneath the soles of your feet—becomes energized and responsive. This is not metaphorical in Thay's teaching; it reflects a somatic reality. Every cell in your body contains awareness; they are not separate from consciousness. By directing mindfulness through the body systematically during walking or sitting practice, you create a state of complete aliveness.

The purpose is not merely physical sensation, though that certainly arises. Rather, turning on every cell creates the foundational conditions for what Thay calls "the state of concentration"—a unified frequency in which all cells operate at the same wavelength. In this state, the separation between observer and observed dissolves, and direct insight into the nature of reality becomes possible.

How Do You Practice Mindful Walking to Activate the Body?

Thich Nhat Hanh describes mindful walking as an embodied technique that bridges the gap between conceptual meditation and lived experience. The first principle is involvement: your body must participate actively in the practice, not be left behind while your mind supposedly meditates. He uses a Vietnamese gatha (chant) to illustrate this: "Enjoy walking in the open-up dimension." This means you are not walking toward enlightenment as a future goal; you are entering into the present reality of the Pure Land with every step.

The technique begins with grounding your awareness in the contact between your feet and the earth. You bring your mind down to the sole of your feet "as if you kiss what is down there." Each cell in that region activates. Then, using mindful breathing, you extend this activation throughout your entire body. The energy of mindfulness spreads upward, turning on cells in your legs, torso, arms, and head. You become "completely free from your thinking about the past, the worry about the future." The technique of mindful breathing generates the energy needed to sustain this cellular awareness as you move.

Importantly, Thay teaches that you can walk either slowly or quickly and maintain the same pleasure and mindfulness. Some practitioners prefer to walk slowly, tasting each step "like a piece of chocolate" that melts on your tongue, extracting every flavor. The key is involvement, not speed. When you walk with full activation of your cells, each step brings "healing and nourishment to you." Because you are fully present and alive, you are capable of touching "the wonders of life in the Pure Land, the kingdom of God" right here, right now. This is not a future promise; it is the immediate fruit of the practice.

What Is the Role of Sitting Meditation in Cellular Activation?

Sitting meditation employs the same principle as walking, but the movement is internal rather than external. In sitting, you are not working with movement but with breathing itself. "Breathing is a kind of working, even in a sitting position," Thay explains. You turn on all the cells in your body through the same systematic application of mindfulness and conscious breath.

When you sit and focus your attention on the breath, you activate what Thay refers to as "pacemaker cells"—cells that, when stimulated by the energy of mindfulness, set the frequency for all other cells in the body. These pacemaker cells create a unified rhythm, and as they are activated, "all the other cells will respond. And all the cells will sing in unison. They will be on the same frequencies, same wavelength." You enter into "a state of concentration" in which your entire organism achieves perfect harmony.

This unified state is not a blank mind or an escape from the body. Rather, it is a profound embodiment where "mindfulness and concentration" work together to transform your physical and mental being. "When every cell comes together as an organism, you enter into a state of concentration in perfect harmony, and that is the foundation of enlightenment," Thay teaches. In this state, the usual sense of separation between inside and outside, self and other, dissolves. Your consciousness and your body are no longer divided; they function as one integrated whole.

How Does the Energy of Mindfulness Function?

The energy of mindfulness is not an abstract or mystical force, though Thay connects it to modern physics. He describes it as a real energetic phenomenon that can be consciously generated and directed through practice. When you engage in walking or sitting meditation with full awareness, you are producing this energy. It flows through your nervous system, activating cells, establishing coherence among them, and creating the unified state of being necessary for enlightenment.

Thay makes a striking observation about sleepiness during meditation, which many practitioners struggle with. The conventional advice is to fight sleepiness through effort or physical discipline. But Thay proposes the opposite approach: "Only when you become very interested in what you are doing, only when you experience bliss and happiness, can you stay awake." The reason is that sleepiness arises when sitting practice is boring or lacking engagement. If you make the practice interesting by activating your whole body and discovering the pleasure available in each moment—the taste of breathing, the sensation of sitting, the aliveness of presence—then sleepiness naturally dissolves.

"You don't have to fight. That is the best way to fight," Thay says. When the energy of mindfulness is fully activated and you are genuinely enjoying the practice, your cells are all "turned on." There is no room for drowsiness because you are completely alive, engaged, and fascinated by what is unfolding moment by moment. This shifts meditation from a discipline you endure into a source of genuine happiness.

What Is the Connection Between the Body and Enlightenment?

A central insight in Thay's teaching is that enlightenment is not the escape or transcendence of the body, but the complete activation and transformation of it. Many spiritual traditions treat the body as an obstacle to be transcended, but Buddhism—as Thay presents it—sees the body as intrinsic to awakening. "When you practice, you have to involve your whole body, not a part of it," he emphasizes.

The reason is that consciousness itself is embodied. When all the cells in your body achieve a unified state through the energy of mindfulness, that very coherence is what allows direct insight into the nature of consciousness and reality. Thay hints at a connection to quantum physics: "In this state of being, the Bose-Einstein condensate becomes possible. You find yourself in a quantum field where every cell is seen as made of all the other cells, where the one becomes all, and where all can be seen in the one." This is his poetic way of describing non-self (emptiness) and interbeing—the Buddhist understanding that all phenomena are interconnected and interdependent.

It is in this deeply embodied state—not in a disembodied mental state—that practitioners find it "easy to realize the inside of emptiness, the inside of not-self." The body is not an obstacle; it is the gateway to enlightenment.

What Are the Five Skandhas and the Five Dimensions of Reality?

In the latter portion of the talk, Thay introduces deeper Buddhist philosophical teachings about the nature of mind and reality. The five skandhas (aggregates) are the five components of human experience: form (the body), feelings, perceptions, mental formations, and consciousness. These are not separate entities but interpenetrating aspects of a unified process.

Thay distinguishes between the perceiver (the subject of awareness) and the perceived (the object of awareness). However, he emphasizes that in deep practice, this duality begins to dissolve. As you train yourself in seeing the object of your perception, you realize that consciousness itself is not separate from what is being perceived. The act of perception is a shared event involving both subject and object in a mutually dependent relationship.

The Five Dimensions of Reality in Buddhism represent different ways of understanding existence. There is the historical dimension (events unfolding in time), the ultimate dimension (the timeless nature of all things), and other dimensions that bridge and integrate these perspectives. Thay's teaching suggests that through full activation of the body and mind via mindfulness practice, you gain access to all these dimensions simultaneously. You are not choosing one over the other; you are embracing the totality of reality as it actually is.

How Does Buddhist Teaching Differ from Neuroscience on Consciousness?

Thay offers reflections on how Western neuroscience and the Buddhist tradition view consciousness quite differently. In the Western view, consciousness is often thought to be generated by the brain—matter produces mind. But in Buddhist understanding, the relationship is more complex and non-linear. Form (the body, including the brain) and consciousness are interdependent; neither generates the other in a simple causal sense.

He raises the profound question: "If there is no perception, how do you know that a brain is there?" This inverts the typical materialist assumption. Without consciousness to perceive, there would be no way to know about the brain's existence. The Buddhist view holds that consciousness and form are two aspects of a single reality, each conditioning the other. This is why the practice of integrating body and mind through mindfulness is so powerful—you are not trying to transcend the body or use the brain to control consciousness. You are allowing body and consciousness to function as the unified whole they have always been.

What Practical Techniques Support Full-Body Activation?

The Sutra on the Full Awareness of Breathing offers concrete exercises to touch all the cells of the body. This sutra, which is central to Thay's teaching, provides a systematic method for directing awareness through the body, generating the energy of mindfulness, and achieving the unified state of concentration. While Thay does not recite the entire sutra in the excerpt provided, he references its techniques as the practical foundation for what he teaches about cellular activation and enlightenment.

The general principle is this: through conscious attention to the breath and deliberate direction of awareness through different regions of the body, you awaken cells that may have been dormant or disconnected from conscious participation. As each region is activated, it comes into harmony with the whole, contributing to the unified frequency in which enlightenment becomes possible. The practice is not mystical or esoteric; it is a direct, systematic training in embodied awareness.

Where to Go From Here

Thich Nhat Hanh's teaching invites practitioners to reconsider what meditation and enlightenment actually are. Rather than viewing them as abstract or disembodied states, his dharma emphasizes direct embodied experience. If you wish to explore this teaching further, begin with mindful walking practice, even for just a few minutes daily. Feel the contact of your feet with the ground, use conscious breathing to activate sensation and awareness throughout your body, and practice being completely present with each step. Notice how this shifts your sense of aliveness and your capacity to appreciate the present moment.

For sitting practice, adopt the same commitment to full-body involvement. Rather than trying to achieve a blank mind, make the practice interesting and engaging. Feel your breath, sense the cells in your body activating, and notice the happiness and ease that arise naturally when you are truly present. Over time, this integrated embodied approach to practice will reveal the profound truth that enlightenment is not separate from the body or the world, but emerges through the complete activation and unification of body, mind, and consciousness.

For deeper study, explore the Sutra on the Full Awareness of Breathing and the teachings on the five skandhas and the five dimensions of reality. These provide the theoretical and practical frameworks for understanding the cellular activation Thay teaches as the foundation of enlightenment.

[1:53] Good morning dear Sangha, today is Sunday the 11th of December in the year 2005

[2:02] And we are in the Upper Hamlet during our Winter Retreat

[2:18] If you have been in hell

[2:23] And you have the capacity to

[2:31] recognize paradise

[2:40] You may be in paradise, but you don't

[2:44] You don't recognize it, you are not capable of touching it

[2:53] But if you have only been in hell, many of us have been

[3:02] And then you have a chance, you have an opportunity

[3:08] Because being in hell is a very basic condition for us to be able to recognize that we are in paradise

[3:16] in the kingdom of God, in the Pure Land

[3:24] Suffering is the background, suffering is the condition

[3:37] When you practice mindful walking

[3:47] You may touch

[3:53] the Kingdom of God. the Pure Land of the Buddha with every step

[4:12] Because you have

[4:14] Had a chance to walk in hell. It's so hot is so

[4:20] difficult that

[4:23] Is now you are capable of

[4:27] touching

[4:30] the Pure Land, the Kingdom of God

[4:41] Those of us who have been in hell we are lucky

[4:45] Well because we know what it is like hell

[4:50] And if you compare

[4:52] with the situation now, we can recognize that we are very lucky

[4:57] We now have the capacity of

[5:02] walking in paradise

[5:11] When you practice walking you involve your body into the practice

[5:22] First you don't walk with your mind

[5:30] If you walk with your mind only, you get lost

[5:39] In the Vietnames gatha we read

[5:42] we recite

[5:44]

[5:47] Then leave an item

[5:50] Shown and even though they won't know Sheila

[5:53] It means that

[5:55] Enjoy working in the open up dimension. You have to walk with your feet. You should have work with your

[6:02] your mind

[6:03] If you work with your mind, you get lost

[6:07] So in walking meditation you have to involve your feet

[6:13] they have involved your

[6:15] body

[6:20] With mindfulness with the energy of mindfulness

[6:24] Do you turn on?

[6:27] Every cell in your body

[6:41] With

[6:46] The power with the energy of mindfulness you turn on every cell your body

[6:54] And then you can work

[7:01] It is like electricity, but you turn on all the other lamps

[7:13] This is

[7:19] This is

[7:22] The basic condition

[7:25] For you to succeed you

[7:32] Would like to bring your mind

[7:42] Down

[7:45] To the level of your feet

[7:50] On the sole of your feet and you work as if you kiss

[8:10] It was down there every cell is turned on

[8:17] They're capable of touching

[8:39] You have turned on every cell in your body

[8:44] Including the cells down there under soldier feet and that is why you can watch

[8:57] You are completely free from

[9:02] Your thinking about the past the worry is about future

[9:08] You are completely free from

[9:12] Your projects

[9:17] Your sorrow your fear

[9:22] The energy of mindfulness has turned you on

[9:27] You are alive you are fully present in the here and now

[9:32] And that is the basic condition for you to touch

[9:36] the wonders of life

[9:38] in the Pureland in the kingdom of God you

[9:47] Can enjoy deeply every step you make

[10:12] It's like when you put a piece of chocolate into your mouth

[10:19] And

[10:21] You wait

[10:23] You allow

[10:27] The chocolate to melt

[10:30] In your tongue

[10:34] Rushing

[10:38] The French say Safin de la bouche

[10:46] It's melting in your mouth

[10:50] And you feel all the flavor

[10:54] The taste of the piece of chocolate you

[11:01] Allowed of the feeling you allow the sensation to be penetrating

[11:09] Into yourself

[11:14] You can also walk like that air is that you make

[11:23] You can enjoy deeply like a piece of chocolate

[11:34] You know that is not good to ate it too much chocolate

[11:39] Christmas is approaching

[11:43] But working like this

[11:46] You are not afraid of

[11:52] Excessive consumption

[11:56] Except bring healing and nourishment to you

[12:03] Each

[12:05] Step

[12:08] Is like a piece of chocolate

[12:12] Without cholesterol

[12:26] And you are capable of that of doing that

[12:35] Enjoy the kingdom of God into here and then now enjoy the Pure Land the wonders of life

[12:48] In order to do that

[12:53] It was the techniques of mindful breathing

[12:58] To generate the energy of mindfulness

[13:01] And with the energy of mindfulness you turn on all the cells in your body

[13:14] This is easy

[13:29] The French say c'est fait ça c'est passé

[13:57] You might like to work slowly to taste every step

[14:09] But you can also

[14:16] Walk faster and yet the pleasure can be the same

[14:28] Mindfulness

[14:31] Can be slow and can be quick don't think that

[14:40] Mindfulness should be slow

[14:53] In the sitting position

[14:55] You also do the same you are not working

[14:59] But you are breathing breathing is a kind of working walk

[15:09] In a sitting position you turn on all the cells in your body

[15:15] Remember in a practice you have to involve your body

[15:22] Because your body is your mind

[15:31] It's part of your mind

[15:42] When you turn on all the cells in your body you come

[15:55] In phase

[15:59] The same frequency the

[16:02] same wavelength

[16:06] and you arrive at a high highly unified state of being

[16:15] Because all the cells the totality of the cells in you they become one

[16:23] In complete harmony

[16:30] And that is thanks to the stimulation of the energy of mindfulness

[16:40] The cells in your body that

[16:44] pace

[16:46] Maker

[16:48] Pacemaker cells

[17:04] As soon as

[17:06] They are turn on by the energy of Magnus

[17:12] Difficult

[17:20] To create

[17:24] The pace and all the other cells will respond

[17:29] And all the cells will sing in unison

[17:40] They will be on the same frequencies same wavelength you're put in a

[17:50] State of

[17:52] concentration

[17:55] Mindfulness and concentration

[17:58] Is the energy that can turn

[18:02] You are

[18:05] Physically and mentally

[18:13] And when every cell come together as

[18:17] an organism

[18:19] You enter into a state of concentration?

[18:26] In perfect harmony and that is the foundation of

[18:36] Of

[18:42] Of enlightenment

[18:45] because

[18:47] When your mind and body found him like that

[18:55] There is mindfulness and concentration

[18:59] And then

[19:01] An in that state of being it is easy to touch

[19:05] The truth to touch the ultimate reality

[19:12] Because

[19:14] Mindfulness and concentration can help

[19:17] The cells to behave like one is no longer

[19:23] separation

[19:26] The one

[19:27] behave like the or and that

[19:30] one has become known and this is a

[19:34] It is possible because of the energy called mindfulness and concentration

[19:47] In body temperature

[19:56] The bose-einstein condensate become possible

[20:07] And

[20:09] You are find yourself in a quantum field

[20:14] Where every cell

[20:17] Is

[20:18] seen as made of

[20:21] all the other cells

[20:23] where the one become all and

[20:27] When all can be seen in the one and that is why inside is easy in the state of being

[20:35] In the inside of interview the inside of not-self

[20:41] The inside of emptiness become very easy to

[20:48] To realize

[21:05] Many Zen practitioners of many generations have tried to

[21:17] Fight

[21:21] Sleepiness

[21:26] They always feel sleepy when they when they sit in meditation so many

[21:33] generations of Zen practitioners fight very hard in order to stay awake daily sitting I

[21:40] Also in the past have fought a lot in order to stay awake during sitting

[21:46] But I have found out that struggling like that does not bring

[21:52] any result

[21:57] Only when you

[22:00] When you become very interested in what you are doing

[22:05] only when you experience

[22:07] Bliss happiness that you can stay awake

[22:12] And that is why you have to make your sitting interesting

[22:26] Into a blessing

[22:30] And suddenly you

[22:34] There's so much to enjoy

[22:36] there in sitting and watch

[22:38] and

[22:39] you don't have to fight anymore because

[22:42] You don't see poppy because it's so interesting

[22:46] It's like never talk

[22:50] When you sleep if you sleep during the dhamma talk because

[22:55] You are bored

[22:58] The Dhamma top is not interesting but if the demo talk is very interesting

[23:06] You cannot sleep you are turned on and

[23:12] You don't have to make any effort and you are very awake the same thing is true

[23:18] in the sitting

[23:20] in

[23:21] You know working

[23:26] If you find a way to enjoy

[23:30] You see that that is your sense

[23:33] if you know that it is nourishing hearing and you feel the happiness of

[23:40] The Dhamma practice

[23:42] and then

[23:44] Even if you don't do try to be awake you are awake

[23:49] Because you are all you enjoy deeply

[23:51] the city

[23:58] If the sitting is boring

[24:03] If you have to make a lot of photos stay awake until

[24:09] The bell

[24:12] Tell you that is the end of the sitting that sitting is not interesting the sitting does not bring you much you

[24:22] Lose your time by practicing

[24:39] You have had experience that you did not sleep at all that night

[24:49] But in the morning the da Matta was so interesting you did not feel sleepy right

[24:58] And if even if you slept very well the night before and if the D'Amato is not interesting

[25:07] Yes

[25:12] You sleepy still feels sleepy right that is why to make the practice interesting

[25:21] To make the practice enjoyable. That is the answer

[25:27] That is the best way or the only way to fight

[25:32] Against sleepiness. You don't have to fight. That is the best way to fight

[25:41] Fighting the non fighting right that is true fight

[26:03] If you are capable of turning on all the cells of your body

[26:10] Having them come together in great harmony and singing together

[26:18] The song of unification of this

[26:41] Yes, ro

[26:43] Your pain

[26:46] And oppression

[26:48] Will naturally go away

[26:57] And you don't need to do anything at all

[27:03] Because the state of being

[27:08] Give you a great capacity to heal

[27:12] You don't do healing but the healing just come just

[27:21] Rely the self

[27:38] We all know that if we allow our body to relax to rest

[27:48] Our body you have the capacity to heal myself everyone knows that

[27:58] So the practice of sitting you're working

[28:04] It done

[28:09] In a way I propose to

[28:13] Help your body and your mind to you

[28:17] We authorized them to

[28:21] You

[28:23] We are not standing on the way of healing

[28:30] Because

[28:37] The death the tendency to struggle the

[28:43] Tendency to always look for something is so strong meanness that

[28:54] We are no longer capable of

[28:58] Being there deeply

[29:04] Established in the present moment and

[29:08] Allowing us to be completely in a moment

[29:15] Enjoying the moment

[29:18] And that is

[29:20] What in the Buddhist tradition called schemata stopping?

[29:30] Stopping relaxing

[29:54] The buddha our teacher gave

[29:58] Us very concrete

[30:02] Practices

[30:04] In the sutra of mindful breathing

[30:10] He or he offer us a few

[30:16] Few exercises in order to realize that

[30:22] Breathing him

[30:25] I'm aware of my body

[30:28] He said bringing I'm aware of

[30:33] My whole body

[30:38] Sacra Kalia

[30:41] Sattva means the totality

[30:44] Britain in I'm aware of the totality of my body

[30:50] My homework, it means every cell in my body

[30:56] The mindfulness should touch every single body not just a number of cells in the brain

[31:06] Sattva Kalia means the whole body greeting in I'm aware of

[31:17] My whole body is very clear

[31:21] Breathing out. I

[31:24] Relax my whole body

[31:29] So the that energy of mindfulness

[31:32] should touch all the cells in the body and

[31:36] should

[31:38] Recognize the presence of the cell in the body

[31:41] Should allowed

[31:44] Should turn on all the cells in the body and allow all the cells in the body to relax

[31:54] Breathing in I'm aware of my own body

[32:09] And that is why I said that when you practice you have to involve your whole body not a part of it

[32:17] Or sitting

[32:35] It's very helpful

[32:40] That in the sitting position

[32:45] You embraced your whole body with the energy of mindfulness

[32:52] And we learn now that our body is made of cells

[33:04] Mr. 5050 trillions of cells

[33:12] And every cell body has the capacity of being of

[33:21] Of being alive by self

[33:32] Every cell has

[33:34] intelligence within as the capacity of

[33:38] cell protecting self nourishing

[33:52] And so this help taking human cells and

[33:58] And open up them in vitro

[34:04] And if they give enough

[34:09] nutrition

[34:12] Our selves can live for a long time

[34:16] out of our body

[34:18] as separate

[34:20] entities

[34:23] Ourselves know how to protect them themselves how to create a new comment

[34:31] How to prevent the toxin to come in how to open

[34:36] The membrane in order to receive oxygen

[34:40] and measurement

[34:43] So we are made of cells like that

[34:48] Ourselves are capable capable of listening of

[34:53] Sensing

[34:57] Of understanding and that is why during the

[35:03] Time of sitting and working we should pay attention to every cell we should

[35:11] Allow energy of mindfulness to touch every cell and turn every server

[35:18] And then they come together in

[35:22] unison

[35:24] And they will they will

[35:26] begin a

[35:28] concert

[35:35] There is a state of unification hi unification

[35:42] When they are all turn on and join together as one organism

[35:52] In that state of being you feel you feel you

[36:01] Have the feeling of

[36:05] Well-being of harmony of happiness

[36:10] And this is called the

[36:16] Public the joy the happiness of our practice

[36:22] And we should feel joy the happiness of protests

[36:27] In the sitting position and in the working position or in any other position of the body

[36:41] In the theme in the Zen tradition

[36:44] we say that the practice of meditation is

[36:49] made daily food and

[36:55] That that is why I work in is also getting food and

[37:02] Sitting is also getting the food

[37:08] With

[37:24] The joy the happiness of meditation of them as daily food

[37:36] So sitting is eating working with eating getting the determined

[37:44] And

[37:47] The joy the happiness for Dhamma

[37:52] happiness

[37:54] Poplar we have a brother in the public whose name is Pablo

[38:03] He smiles a lot

[38:13] So cut this sitting in such a way that you feel Fablab happiness in the practice of the Dharma

[38:21] during the whole time of sitting

[38:24] like this walking meditation in such a way that you

[38:27] enjoy

[38:29] every step you make

[38:31] every step is

[38:34] Nourishing healing bringing joy

[40:10] Next year, we are going to have a retreat on

[40:19] Neurosciences and

[40:22] Meditation

[40:36] And the rate it will help us

[40:42] Rate it will be an opportunity for us to come together

[40:48] learning from each other and

[40:50] Put into the practice

[40:53] What you have discovered in?

[40:56] meditation in Buddhism what you have discovered in neuroscience

[41:05] One of the basic questions

[41:08] Neuroscientists use to ask is how come

[41:14] That

[41:18] The activities of the neurons

[41:22] activities of the brain the computation of the brain

[41:29] Is something effective can bring out consciousness which is something

[41:38] subjective

[41:44] And so far no one has been able to offer a

[41:51] Satisfying answer

[41:55] It seems the majority

[42:00] Think like this this is

[42:06] This is the Breen

[42:11] Object

[42:14] Of our studies that is the brain that

[42:19] Is the object of neuroscience

[42:24] And that is a objectivity

[42:30] We agreed that is something that exists outside of our consciousness the

[42:41] Overwhelming majority is thinking like that

[42:47] My brain exists as an objective reality

[42:58] And from that objective things emerge

[43:07] Consciousness, which is a subjectivity

[43:19] And the question is how a

[43:22] Objective thing can give rise to a subjectivity

[43:27] How the computations of the neurons then bring out consciousness?

[43:35] And there is fear

[43:40] That if consciousness is

[43:43] something that emerged from the brain and then if we change the brain

[43:53] We can if we modify the brain we can modify consciousness

[44:10] In the

[44:12] end

[44:13] in a

[44:15] Buddhist tradition

[44:16] The way of looking is quite different

[44:29] We think of the human person

[44:33] We think of the human person as having form

[44:37] feelings

[44:39] perceptions

[44:40] mental formations and consciousness

[44:44] And these five elements they're

[44:48] The inter are

[44:53] One of the five contain the other four

[45:05] Suppose this entity called

[45:11] Be been and this entity called sea consciousness

[45:24] If you are trained in the Buddhist tradition

[45:28] You see the brain as the object of your perception

[45:36] First of all, you see the brain as the object of your perception

[45:41] There is a perception

[45:45] If there is no perception how you know that no brain is there

[45:53] Right, so we begin with a perception perception is one of the five skandhas

[46:04] From feelings perceptions

[46:12] So perception is something that include

[46:21] The subject

[46:26] The subject

[46:30] And object of perception

[46:40] Perception

[46:51] This is

[47:01] We draw like this align in order to to

[47:08] Distinguish

[47:10] between

[47:11] the element

[47:13] perceiver and

[47:14] the element

[47:17] object of being perceived

[47:24] In the Buddhist tradition we call this part that's honorable

[47:36] King King fun

[48:03] - it can be translated as the perceiver

[48:11] The perceiver and

[48:14] This

[48:17] Part of perception is called limited by very

[48:27] Too often

[48:34] And it can be translated as the perceived

[48:50] And according to the Buddhist inside the 2-part leads to part of perception

[48:58] Arise through Heather at the same time

[49:08] If there is no object there's no subject listen if there's no

[49:17] Subject, there's no object to perceive always means to perceive something

[49:27] Black conceals said to your concerns the Ganga shows

[49:36] There cannot be a perceiver without the object

[49:40] perceived

[49:42] and

[49:43] that is why it is like

[49:48] It's like

[49:53] The line aah that give rise to two

[50:00] Triangles and

[50:03] This and this triangle

[50:07] And this one they all rise at the same time

[50:12] The same thing is true with our perception subject and object arrive at the same time

[50:26] Don't I

[50:28] Go home

[50:30] don't I -

[50:34] They respond to each other

[50:53] Let's pump each other's at the same time synchronization

[51:01] Number number

[51:09] So the the Buddhist practitioner makin themselves

[51:17] To see the object of perception as part of perception

[51:23] So when they see the brain

[51:28] They look at the brain, they know that the brain is the object of their perception

[51:37] So they don't call it exactly something objective something objective

[51:50] We all know parents

[51:52] That those of us who stay in Paris for 20 years that those of us who have visited only

[51:59] Paris for a few days and each one each one of us has

[52:03] an

[52:05] image of Paris that

[52:07] is

[52:08] the object of our perception and

[52:11] If we compare

[52:13] all the Paris

[52:15] that we have

[52:17] No Paris resemble to another Paris, right?

[52:22] So Paris is first of all our perception

[52:31] Even neuroscientist

[52:34] each of them look at the brain differently issue them has

[52:39] his or her own brain

[52:43] Imaging the brain

[52:50] And then the

[52:53] brain is the object of our perception and

[52:58] Our perception is consciousness is the mind

[53:03] And

[53:10] Logically speaking. It is with our consciousness that we are looking at the brain

[53:22] And brain become part of our consciousness

[53:29] And then there are those of us who study

[53:33] Consciousness

[53:35] There are those of us who study

[53:41] Psychology

[53:44] And consciousness become an object of our studies

[53:50] Because we can observe the brain and we can observe our consciousness so consciousness is also

[53:57] something objective

[53:59] if you say

[54:01] that the brain is something objective and then

[54:04] Consciousness as the object of your study should also be something of the tea also

[54:10] Why do you believe that?

[54:12] Only the brain is objective and the consciousness and consciousness is subjective

[54:28] So both B and C objects of consciousness

[54:39] Consciousness studying consciousness

[54:43] Consciousness become object of consciousness

[54:46] and that is why in Buddhism we speak up another part of

[55:02] Perception

[55:13] The first part that's an abaya

[55:17] The perceiver the second part nimi time I got the perceived and there is another part that

[55:27] Observed both of them

[55:33] And it is called SWA SWA Baba

[55:45] - -

[55:50] Auditing fun

[55:55] This is the base

[56:16] Anyone has a corn coin one row one cent

[56:53] When we look at the coin we see through phases in French

[57:10] Believe us and in English what?

[57:15] Harry tells you see the head

[57:18] The first part is head the second part his tell the first aspect is head. The second aspect is tell

[57:26] but both of them

[57:31] Babies

[57:33] On a third part which is the Cooper I met battle

[57:39] If the metal is not there it's impossible for

[57:45] Four for the head and the tail to manifest

[57:52] So that part is called ba ba ba

[58:00] Ba the base today today is the base the substance

[58:13] And in Buddhism

[58:16] This is a real consciousness

[58:19] There's only one small part of consciousness

[58:25] And not only these come from the base but this also come from the base that

[58:33] Is what is modern I said that our body is part of our mind

[58:43] This has wisdom in it you can keep

[59:04] So this part

[59:12] Can observe this and can also observe this

[59:18] Because b and c can be can be the object of

[59:28] Our study

[59:34] Of inquiry when you practice meditation

[59:43] You make use of a B of C, but you also make use of

[1:00:00] Ecology ground

[1:00:03] With Eve, she

[1:00:07] The ground for manifestation of both body and mind

[1:00:20] And this is what in Buddhism that is called vision vision Allah

[1:00:50] And what we call consciousness most of it is e

[1:01:02] 2 is vision

[1:01:06] Is much much broader than e -

[1:01:20] I

[1:01:24] Think the

[1:01:26] Neuroscientist will profit a lot from this kind of inside

[1:01:29] They can go verify they based themselves on this inside

[1:02:11] You know after spoke of the four diamond the fourth dimension time

[1:02:17] We have in a space

[1:02:19] Which has three dimensions?

[1:02:21] and then they add

[1:02:24] time and then it would be the

[1:02:28] four-dimensional continuum

[1:02:31] In Buddhism we

[1:02:36] May speak of the five

[1:02:38] dimension of finding dimensions of reality

[1:02:44] The first may be called Rupa

[1:02:56] Metaphor

[1:03:09] In the first dimension Hooper

[1:03:23] There is a distinction

[1:03:27] Analysis

[1:03:28] in the Buddhist teaching

[1:03:31] But this distinction analysis is only for the sake of the practice

[1:03:37] not for the sake of

[1:03:41] Describing the

[1:03:44] Prism is more interested in

[1:03:48] how to transform suffering

[1:03:50] Wisdom is less interested in interpreting reality

[1:03:56] The difference between science and Buddhism is that science the trying to describe

[1:04:02] the Buddhism is more interested in solving the problem of

[1:04:09] suffering

[1:04:11] But why trying to transform suffering the teaching?

[1:04:19] Shows the way and why showing the way it expressed also the

[1:04:27] insight about

[1:04:31] About reality that is why we can profit

[1:04:38] That is why from time to time there is distinction analysis in Buddhism and

[1:04:45] And we have said that that kind of distinction

[1:04:50] that kind of analysis is only for the sake of the practice and not for the sake of

[1:04:58] interpreting the world

[1:05:02] Like

[1:05:07] Like to when we speaker for five skandhas

[1:05:15] We have a proper form feelings

[1:05:23] Perceptions

[1:05:28] Mental formations

[1:05:35] And consciousness

[1:05:39] And

[1:05:40] if you look at this park, and as you see already you

[1:05:46] see already the fact that this kind of

[1:05:49] Distinction this kind of analysis is only to help

[1:05:54] With practice because

[1:05:59] Mental formations in the tips in Buddhism may include 51 categories

[1:06:14] - it is one of them

[1:06:20] Compassion is one of them

[1:06:23] Anger is one

[1:06:26] And feeling is one of them perception is one under each one and yet

[1:06:40] Buddhism does not analyze into three form mental formation

[1:06:53] And consciousness

[1:06:59] Why not three what file

[1:07:03] Because filling and perception are included in mental formations

[1:07:09] So

[1:07:11] For the sake of description, you can say form mental formations and consciousness. They still of

[1:07:18] Why single out feelings and perceptions?

[1:07:21] because

[1:07:22] In the practice is very important

[1:07:26] To deal with your feelings. It's very important to deal with perceptions. That is why these things are treated separately

[1:07:35] And you can see very well that if there is analysis in Buddhism that is

[1:07:41] to help the practice and not to

[1:07:46] Represent not to interpret the world not to interpret reality for the sake of curiosity

[1:07:56] And yet there is

[1:07:59] These mental formations, they are in consciousness. They are not something separate

[1:08:06] Like when you say a river and you say the water?

[1:08:11] drops of water in the river

[1:08:13] So consciousness is like the river and men all mental formations are like drops of water in the river

[1:08:21] Why don't say just consciousness?

[1:08:24] Because mental formations are part of consciousness

[1:08:28] And that is why

[1:08:31] Analysis

[1:08:33] Distinctions in Buddhism is for the sake of the practice

[1:08:46] And then according to the inside the Buddhism

[1:08:54] Consciousness evolved nama and Rupa

[1:09:02] Rupa his form and Dharma in the mind

[1:09:23] In the traveling tab in India

[1:09:38] We learned that because of the lesion

[1:09:51] Because of delusion ignorance

[1:10:01] That is why

[1:10:06] The

[1:10:09] Impulses the formations are born formations like and

[1:10:20] Are craving

[1:10:23] All these kind of

[1:10:26] Afflictions are born because on the ground

[1:10:32] Of confusion of ignorance

[1:10:42] And because of these afflictions

[1:10:49] Emerge consciousness

[1:11:06] This this is a Vidya

[1:11:11] It is some color its vision and

[1:11:22] From consciousness your eyes

[1:11:31] Jinsuk nama Rupa

[1:11:43] Mind and body psycho samba

[1:12:05] So reasoned I hear is the ground of

[1:12:12] Consciousness and the body

[1:12:20] The opposite of vision is partner

[1:12:29] When wish naina is completely purified become partner

[1:12:39] If you call it vision die because there is illusion and

[1:12:45] And

[1:12:49] Negative formation in it. And we host the is illusion and affliction in it. That is why

[1:12:57] Body and mind manifest like that

[1:13:01] from brush brush Nia

[1:13:06] Body and mind manifests in a different way

[1:13:12] Because body and mind here carries

[1:13:22] Delusion

[1:13:26] Afflictions in

[1:13:29] Them

[1:13:32] It's very clear that from the ground of busines are born

[1:13:37] manifest

[1:13:39] Body and mind

[1:13:45] So consciousness

[1:13:47] If it is vision it include both nama and Rupa

[1:13:51] And in that case we have to you can cross form because in consciousness the already form

[1:13:59] and

[1:14:04] And the rest like censuses are feelings perceptions mental formations and so on

[1:14:15] So

[1:14:16] the

[1:14:18] Conclusion. Is that in Buddhism?

[1:14:20] sometimes we have to

[1:14:23] list English

[1:14:25] This from that sometimes we have to analyze

[1:14:28] But this distinction this analysis is only for the sake of the practice

[1:14:35] We have to remember that

[1:14:46] So

[1:14:49] When I speak of the five that mentioned we have to bear in mind

[1:14:54] this is

[1:14:56] for the sake of the practice

[1:15:00] and not for the practice of

[1:15:02] describing the world

[1:15:06] And the first dimension is Rupa and

[1:15:12] Rupa in the whole time. It has four four four

[1:15:26] Is for for

[1:15:33] Not only in India but also in the West people believe that

[1:15:39] The essence of Rupa is what fire earth and air

[1:15:47] The four Maha Buddha

[1:15:51] Until discovered atoms

[1:16:25] In French oui speaking in French we distinguish between

[1:16:34] La magia

[1:16:35] Annette and

[1:16:37] la marcha livened

[1:16:40] living metal

[1:16:42] in animate Metro

[1:16:58] In Buddhism it has been a long time people think of method of

[1:17:03] matter

[1:17:05] as composed by

[1:17:08] Eyes

[1:17:11] Iris matter ear nose tongue

[1:17:17] Body

[1:17:22] Not mine and inform sound

[1:17:30] Smell taste touch

[1:17:38] And mental object

[1:17:59] 9

[1:18:15] Mental breaks means ideas

[1:18:25] Like ideas we have of all things

[1:18:45] The image of a person that

[1:18:50] Has had a big influence in us is there

[1:18:56] in US

[1:18:59] And this that image like the image of our country our city our friends

[1:19:09] They can they can intervene they can

[1:19:17] Condition our way of thinking and acting they are energy

[1:19:22] And as they are as they are energy they are met

[1:19:27] Because energy and metal are very close

[1:19:43] And this is is written in Chinese fab soon

[1:20:08] Mr. Kind of matter

[1:20:10] That I

[1:20:14] Include in mental objects verbs

[1:20:18] Dhamma Agathon

[1:20:22] Dharma Dharma Iassogna

[1:20:33] You know some time that the object of our consciousness become

[1:20:41] Come something very strong -

[1:20:47] And they continue to

[1:20:50] - wait heavily on us

[1:20:53] That our way of speaking thinking acting conditioned by it

[1:21:01] They follow us like a ghost and

[1:21:05] They can defend they are

[1:21:10] Energy, and that is also matter

[1:21:53] And there is

[1:21:58] Matter that is that is called that method that is called that is described it as

[1:22:08] Something that is extremely concentrated

[1:22:14] Good concept

[1:22:40] Ladies and Adams that is the proton and a nothing extremely concentrated

[1:23:00] Good luck

[1:23:11] Sookie a prayer concentrate

[1:23:17] And

[1:23:21] Be some typical

[1:23:30] In all time the or die's they have already been able to see that

[1:23:37] That the small does smallest things that is very concentrated

[1:23:49] Conclusion those that worship first

[1:24:06] That which is very concentrated and

[1:24:13] Then come go cancer

[1:24:42] Translated by death which belong to space

[1:24:58] Ha ha Jessica

[1:25:09] And this kind of matter is very light the mass is

[1:25:15] Almost nothing

[1:25:17] and they be that maybe no mass at all like

[1:25:21] like the probe the photo

[1:25:24] and

[1:25:25] This is the neighbor of space

[1:25:28] It is almost space

[1:25:31] is called

[1:25:32] Lynne Curtin Remington means that the neighbor of space it is almost no no matter it is the neighbor of space

[1:25:40] It is space

[1:25:43] This difficult to distinguish between space and this kind of better

[1:25:58] And then the kind of methods between spoken of here follow is followed with

[1:26:06] Partially Anja

[1:26:36] Samih Danica

[1:26:46] That

[1:26:49] Which

[1:26:51] Belong

[1:26:54] Through the mindfulness training

[1:27:02] Sukhiya partyi alle discipline

[1:27:07] - mo

[1:27:15] You have listened through the five - standing you have listened to the 14 - tell -

[1:27:24] And you feel that you need?

[1:27:27] you have

[1:27:28] the need of

[1:27:30] receiving dependence

[1:27:32] in order to live a better life a

[1:27:35] life of practice a life of peace and joy, so

[1:27:40] You ask Messiah to transmit to you to find my Palestinians. Oh

[1:27:48] You ask the Sangha to ordain you as a month and

[1:27:54] And

[1:27:55] during that ceremony of ordination you receive this kind of

[1:28:00] matter

[1:28:02] of energy

[1:28:04] And after donation you become another person

[1:28:08] Your face look brighter. You have more energy

[1:28:12] because you have a

[1:28:14] place a body in yourself

[1:28:19] You can see the difference between a

[1:28:24] Spirit and an office after having

[1:28:29] After having received

[1:28:32] The ten cleanings their face look very different and

[1:28:38] There is much more energy in them you don't see that energy but that energy

[1:28:47] Influence and motivate them to do the things that they have not been able to do before the ordination

[1:28:56] And

[1:28:57] That is a kind of energy

[1:29:00] That is a kind of metal spoken of in Buddhism

[1:29:05] those of us who have

[1:29:07] received trainings

[1:29:09] who have practiced and

[1:29:12] To

[1:29:15] To live according to the trainings we have that kind of energy in us that people don't and

[1:29:22] that is also a part of

[1:29:26] Rupa and

[1:29:28] That since that that kind of matter does not

[1:29:33] just not manifest and

[1:29:36] We call it for being shut

[1:29:39] The matter that does not manifest on the appearance, but it is there

[1:29:49] It makes you stronger it makes you

[1:29:53] happier

[1:29:54] More secure and that is the practice of the precepts the practice of mindful paintings

[1:30:01] that you nourish in you with the

[1:30:05] Very life

[1:30:09] And everyone who has received the trainings the precepts know that they have got energies and

[1:30:17] They have to nourish that energy, you know for the energy to grow and to protect them and to make them happy

[1:30:28] So

[1:30:31] It's interesting to see how Buddhism think of matter of LaMacchia

[1:30:38] And here you don't see anymore the limit between energy and matter

[1:30:50] And this is more than two thousand years ago

[1:30:56] The fourth is

[1:31:00] Pinkish oh sure

[1:31:30] This is also a energy and this is the energy come from the way you look

[1:31:47] Binkey means imagination mental constructions that

[1:31:57] Will is mental construction not reality

[1:32:07] You think of father and son as two

[1:32:15] Entities different entities

[1:32:18] You don't see the connection between the two you don't see the father in a son. You don't see the Sun in the father

[1:32:26] You don't see you are not capable of seeing the sunshine in the flower you are not capable of seeing the cloud in the flower

[1:32:33] You only discriminate

[1:32:35] you think that everything is

[1:32:38] outside of everything else

[1:32:40] that is a

[1:32:42] kind of

[1:32:44] Way of seeing

[1:32:47] Based on discrimination based on

[1:32:51] Ignorance

[1:32:53] and it brings a lot of suffering and this is also

[1:32:58] Energy the energy that we know a lot of suffering not like the energy

[1:33:06] Semantics

[1:33:09] This bring

[1:33:11] solidity and

[1:33:13] freedom and

[1:33:14] joy this bring

[1:33:17] suffering

[1:33:19] separation

[1:33:21] Delusion and it is in you and that is why you have to learn how to look at things

[1:33:28] Differently we have to see things

[1:33:31] Not outside regionals. We have to learn things two sittings inside. Rich others

[1:33:41] No

[1:33:42] David bohm that we are known scientists in britain. He wrote a book

[1:33:49] the title the

[1:33:54] Exclusive x

[1:34:03] The two orders

[1:34:06] And

[1:34:08] implicate order

[1:34:10] The explicate

[1:34:14] Order and implicate order

[1:34:25] He practice looking deeply as a

[1:34:28] Physicist and his he was able to see that one electron is made of other elephants

[1:34:36] He was capable of seeing that that one contains

[1:34:41] No

[1:34:42] and he said that

[1:34:46] We

[1:34:47] Used to sittings in their explicate order. We see things outside Rick Sanders

[1:34:53] the sunshine is outside of

[1:34:57] of the flower

[1:35:01] The milk is outside of the ice-cream

[1:35:05] We don't see things in the implicit order and seeing things

[1:35:14] Only the expect order is the English circle

[1:35:19] That which is made of mental constructions

[1:35:24] It does not

[1:35:28] Reflect reality

[1:35:34] So training ourselves in order to see

[1:35:40] The whole universe

[1:35:42] in a grain of

[1:35:44] mustard

[1:35:45] And then you you can touch the implicate order and you can get rid of

[1:35:53] this kind of

[1:35:54] Energy in you that creates so much suffering

[1:35:59] Which is made of mental constructions

[1:36:06] And the last

[1:36:09] category of matter is

[1:36:12] The Turkish version

[1:36:39] This is also a source of an energy that is

[1:36:43] That is the outcome of

[1:36:46] meditation

[1:36:47] concentration

[1:36:48] mindfulness

[1:36:50] With mindfulness and concentration you have that energy in you that can bring you freedom

[1:36:58] The diamonds freedom

[1:37:07] And this is what I spoke about this morning when we have

[1:37:14] When we practice mindful breathing we

[1:37:17] Generate the energy of mindfulness and concentration and with that energy. We turn all the cells in our bodies, huh?

[1:37:27] Allah bring everything together in harmony in peace

[1:37:35] And this energy

[1:37:38] Which is the base of that the foundation of that peace and harmony?

[1:37:44] Is considered to be a

[1:37:48] kind of rupa a very

[1:37:52] subtle, you cannot

[1:37:55] Photography

[1:37:58] You cannot

[1:38:00] Draw you cannot explain

[1:38:04] So when we when we we begin

[1:38:09] by saying that matter

[1:38:11] We can with eyes ears nose tongue body form some smell taste touch

[1:38:18] mint object and we continue with which is

[1:38:24] Extremely concentrated

[1:38:26] which is

[1:38:28] Very light very close to space

[1:38:31] which is

[1:38:33] which is

[1:38:36] I wish which is the effect of

[1:38:42] Mindfulness trainings which is the effect of mental

[1:38:49] Construction and which is the freedom and enjoy born from

[1:38:54] mindfulness and concentration and you see that that is the description of

[1:38:58] metal in reason

[1:39:00] and you no longer see

[1:39:03] the line separating

[1:39:06] between

[1:39:08] nama, Rupa body and mind

[1:39:18] In modern physics

[1:39:23] The particle

[1:39:27] Is sometime described as a wave and sometimes described it as a particle

[1:39:46] The same particle sometime manifests itself as

[1:39:54] a wave

[1:39:59] Energy sometime manifests itself as a particle

[1:40:06] And in how they

[1:40:12] Way of see this is a little bit difficult to accept a

[1:40:19] Particle should be a particle

[1:40:21] The particle is different from a wave

[1:40:25] the wave is a wave it cannot be a

[1:40:29] particle and yet

[1:40:31] when people

[1:40:36] Do

[1:40:41] Experimentation

[1:40:42] They see that the same particle sometime review itself as a way sometime else reversal as a particle

[1:40:53] And

[1:40:54] that

[1:40:56] Is why?

[1:40:57] They have invented a new word

[1:41:00] To call the particle wave eco

[1:41:07] Vehicle it can be it is a particle it is at the same vehicle

[1:41:21] Let us go back to what we saw in the beginning

[1:41:25] This is the brain. This is the

[1:41:28] Consciousness. This is the ground

[1:41:35] The ground with Nana

[1:41:39] Sometimes

[1:41:41] Manifests itself as a matter

[1:41:46] Sometime manifested itself as consciousness

[1:41:50] And what you think to be matter be careful? It might be consciousness

[1:41:54] What you may think of consciousness be aware. It may be better because

[1:42:01] Then you cannot draw a line with in between the total

[1:42:08] And this is a way out for the scientists who

[1:42:14] Study the idea. That matter is better and mine is mine the two two different

[1:42:21] entities

[1:42:22] but in the Buddhist teaching

[1:42:25] both

[1:42:27] Manifestations from the same ground

[1:42:32] And we can learn to look at the brain as consciousness we can learn to look at the body as consciousness

[1:42:40] We also can learn to look at consciousness as body

[1:42:53] The lesson we can learn from this dhamma talk is that we have to treat our body

[1:43:02] As our consciousness

[1:43:04] The practice has to involve our body in it

[1:43:08] You cannot just practice with your mind

[1:43:11] Because your body is your consciousness

[1:43:15] Your body is an aspect of your consciousness and consciousness is a

[1:43:24] Part of your body

[1:43:26] And you cannot say that the body is both to consciousness our consciousness able to Bob to the body

[1:43:35] It's not

[1:43:37] consciousness that emerge from

[1:43:39] from body our body emerge from consciousness

[1:43:44] But they manifest together at the same time

[1:43:50] Like

[1:43:56] Like the to trial triangle

[1:44:00] Not one first and give rise to the other and if you look like that you can solve many questions

[1:44:29] Thank with some time

[1:44:55] Bring some time to one company I

[1:45:01] Think the key by particular in wild, goodbye

[1:45:14] : it is fine

[1:47:04] You
