True Confidence: Beyond Egoto Universal Consciousness

Eckhart Tolle

Eckhart Tolle distinguishes between two dimensions of human identity: the manifested self (thoughts, roles, form) and the deeper, unmanifested self (undefinable, formless consciousness). True confidence does not stem from ego-driven external achievements but from accessing primordial intelligence through stillness and presence. Intelligence without wisdom—seen in technology, politics, and weapons development—creates destruction; wisdom emerges only when the thinking mind becomes an instrument of deeper consciousness rather than the primary guide. Tolle argues that continuous thinking and quick conclusions block access to this deeper knowing, and that authentic confidence arises when we align with universal consciousness and stop demanding that the mind control every moment.

What Are the Two Dimensions of Self?

Tolle opens his talk with a story: at a San Francisco conference, an entertainer—part yogi, part magician—submerged himself in a glass tank of water and held his breath for seven minutes while remaining perfectly still. When Tolle was asked if he could perform the same feat, he replied: "I don't think I can, but I can stop thinking for seven minutes." The performer agreed this was essentially what he was doing inside the tank.

This exchange sets up Tolle's central teaching: there are two dimensions to who you are. The first is the manifested self—defined in form, encompassing physical body, psychological identity, and the thinking entity. This is the "you" that has accumulated knowledge, beliefs about yourself, and a conventional sense of identity based on thought.

The second dimension is the unmanifested self—what the Buddha called the unborn, uncreated, unmanifested consciousness. This is the undefined, unknown dimension of awareness that does not depend on form or thought. Tolle quotes the Buddha's teaching: "If there were not the unborn, the unmanifested, the uncreated, there would be no escape from the born, the manifested, and the created—and you would be completely stuck in it." The purpose of human existence, in evolutionary terms, is to discover this deeper being and bring it into life.

Can Your Identity Exist Without Thought?

One of Tolle's key observations is that most people conflate their sense of self with the thinking mind. But notice, he suggests, that you have already discovered you do not need to think continuously. Your deeper sense of who you are does not depend on what your mind is saying about you. There is a more immediate, more real sense of "I" than anything you could find through thinking about yourself.

This is not abstract philosophy; it is something you can verify directly. When you stop labeling yourself, when you stop the internal commentary, a presence remains. That remaining presence is not a thought about you—it is you, prior to thought. Tolle calls this space the "ground of being," always present but obscured by continuous mental noise.

What Is Primordial Intelligence?

To access the unmanifested consciousness, Tolle teaches, you must enter "the space of no thought," which is always present but usually covered up by mental chatter. When you first enter this space, you encounter something disorienting: not-knowing. This is uncomfortable for the conditioned mind, which believes safety comes from accumulated knowledge and predictability.

What you are accessing in this space is primordial intelligence—intelligence that has not yet become thought. It is not measurable in the conventional sense; it cannot be captured in words or concepts. But it is real, and it is far more powerful than the accumulated knowledge and thinking patterns stored in your brain.

The practical requirement is that you must relinquish your exclusive reliance on conditioned knowledge and thinking. This does not mean rejecting the mind entirely—it means stopping the unconscious belief that you must continuously think to work things out, to control situations, or to know what to do. As long as you cling exclusively to the thinking mind as your guide, you cannot access this deeper intelligence and will remain "very limited, not creative, and ultimately not wise."

Why Is Intelligence Without Wisdom Dangerous?

Tolle offers a stark observation: you can have a highly developed, sophisticated mind completely lacking in wisdom. When this occurs—in individuals, organizations, or societies—the results are destructive. A brilliant intellect without the grounding of wisdom becomes a tool of harm.

He points to contemporary examples: politicians with university degrees and conventional intelligence who make decisions profoundly lacking in wisdom, failing to account for the totality of a situation or the deeper implications of their actions. He mentions the weapons industry: "The highly developed industry that creates dreadful weapons of destruction—these people are all intelligent. Otherwise they wouldn't be able to do it. But how can you build an atom bomb without intelligence? It requires highly intelligent people."

The problem is that intelligence, when not guided by wisdom from a deeper dimension of consciousness, becomes dangerous in proportion to its sophistication. True wisdom must come from the unmanifested realm and use the thinking mind as an instrument of expression, not as the master. When wisdom guides intelligence, the mind becomes a tool for creative and beneficial action. When intelligence acts alone, it creates havoc.

What Blocks Access to Deeper Knowing?

Tolle identifies a specific cultural and educational pattern that blocks access to primordial intelligence: the demand for immediate conclusions. In schools, the student who gives the quickest answer to a teacher's question is often praised as the brightest. There is no time or encouragement for those who need to sit with the question, let it sink in, and wait for understanding to emerge.

He notes that Einstein's parents were concerned when he was young because he was "so slow—it was sinking in." The slower pace of genuine understanding is mistaken for intellectual inadequacy. But genuine wisdom often requires this slower registration: the question must be allowed to penetrate, to connect with something deeper, before an authentic response can arise.

Every moment, the conditioned mind tries to impose immediate interpretations on what is happening, on other people, on situations. It names, judges, and concludes instantly. This creates a constant psychological fortress that prevents direct contact with the present moment and with the deeper intelligence within it. The antidote is the "courage to go into that unknown place"—to simply look at what is here without immediately imposing a framework of interpretation.

How Does Presence Create Authentic Confidence?

Here is where Tolle's teaching shifts from problem diagnosis to practical realization. Real confidence is not rooted in external achievements, possessions, or appearance. Ego-based confidence depends on external validation: "Do people like me? Am I successful? Do I have wealth, status, or a beautiful body?" All of these are fragile because they depend on circumstances that constantly change and on the opinions of others.

What Tolle calls "so-called self-confidence not egoic self-confidence" arises from a completely different source. When you are present—when you stop the mental chatter and rest as awareness itself—something inherent in consciousness flows into the moment. You are simply looking, simply giving your attention and awareness to what is. In that state, you are not separate from the totality; you are connected.

The ego, by contrast, is fundamentally a "disconnected state of consciousness." It operates from the illusion that you are autonomous and separate from the universe. This separateness creates continuous anxiety: "What's the threat? What do I need to protect? How do I compete?" The ego-based confidence built on accumulated achievements is always shaky because it is built on the false premise of separation.

Authentic confidence, by contrast, is not based on anything you have accumulated. It is not dependent on wealth, good looks, skills, or status. It is based on an alignment with something constant and infinite—the consciousness from which all form arises. This is why Tolle emphasizes that "you're not autonomous—every person is an expression of the one life." When you genuinely realize this, the anxiety dissolves. You no longer need continuous validation because you are not proving anything to anyone. You are simply an expression of universal consciousness responding to the present moment with the full intelligence available to you.

Where to Go From Here

The shift from ego-based to authentic confidence is not a belief system to adopt but a direct perception to realize. Begin by noticing the gap between your thinking mind and your deeper sense of presence. Notice how often you impose interpretations and conclusions on the present moment before you have fully seen it. Practice allowing questions and situations to simply be, without immediately naming or judging them. Gradually, you will recognize that there is a knowing that does not come from thought—an intelligence available to you whenever you stop demanding that the thinking mind control everything. From this recognition, genuine confidence naturally arises, rooted not in ego but in your connection to the consciousness from which all life emerges.

[0:00] a couple of weeks ago I spoke briefly at

[0:17] a conference in San Francisco the big

[0:25] conference close to 10,000 people annual

[0:30] conference mostly for business people

[0:35] but always towards the very end they

[0:38] have a spiritual person

[0:42] which is better than no spiritual person

[0:50] and then the organizer invited a small

[0:58] group of people who spoke at the

[1:01] conference and some who attended the

[1:03] conference to his home for dinner small

[1:08] group meaning 150 and he organized even

[1:15] some entertainment the main person

[1:18] providing the entertainment is the kind

[1:26] of yogi magician nobody knows exactly

[1:31] what the other he's more for yogi or

[1:33] more for magician or whether is it's a

[1:37] combination or whether everything is

[1:40] just tricks anybody this person the main

[1:46] entertainment of the evening when people

[1:49] had eaten in the garden there they had

[1:53] erected a tent a big tent enough 450

[1:59] people in the middle of the area there

[2:01] was a raised pedestal and on it was a

[2:06] gigantic water tank glass transparent

[2:11] with a few fishes swimming in it and

[2:17] then it was announced that this man

[2:18] would now come and get into this tank

[2:22] and hold his breasts for seven minutes

[2:27] and that's what happened he came still

[2:33] wearing a few clothes and he climbed up

[2:40] submerged himself in the tank and of

[2:43] course everybody could see him he was

[2:44] floating in there and there was a

[2:47] countdown and for seven minutes and

[2:52] while he was in there he he looked at

[2:55] everybody from inside the tank like a

[3:00] fish would look at him but completely

[3:06] under still

[3:14] and he managed to hold his breath for

[3:18] seven minutes and then finally he came

[3:22] out and then after he had recovered from

[3:27] that ordeal the organizer wanted me to

[3:33] meet him so there were a few people

[3:36] standing around and he was there and one

[3:40] of the people standing around so can you

[3:44] do that he asked me and I said I don't

[3:56] think I can but I can stop thinking for

[4:00] seven minutes

[4:09] the man who had been in the tank said

[4:12] it's very much like that he meant I

[4:16] suppose being in the tank and he

[4:19] probably meant when he's in the tank

[4:22] he's not thinking because if he were

[4:25] thinking he would last for 7 minutes

[4:32] presuming that it's not a trick we don't

[4:36] know but it didn't seem to be a trick he

[4:38] was just in there holding his breath

[4:48] so I mentioned this story because I want

[4:56] to emphasize again this afternoon the

[4:58] main point of why we're here and that is

[5:04] to fully realize that there are two

[5:14] dimensions so to speak to who you are

[5:17] the one that is defined in form which

[5:23] includes the physical form and the

[5:25] psychological form and the thinking

[5:27] entity so your consciousness is has the

[5:34] two dimensions there is an intermediate

[5:36] area but we don't need to go there

[5:39] there's the conscious dimension of

[5:41] thinking and that creates your

[5:45] conventional sense of identity and there

[5:50] is the deeper space where there is a

[5:55] vast consciousness that is not defined

[5:58] in form so there's the two of you the

[6:03] known the person and the unknown the

[6:11] undefined

[6:14] or as the Buddha called it the

[6:19] unmanifested the unborn the uncreated

[6:27] and the Buddha added this is one of the

[6:32] sutras in my free translation we said

[6:38] there is the unborn the unmanifested the

[6:42] uncreated if there were not sorry the

[6:46] sutras a little bit repetitive if they

[6:48] were not the unborn the unmanifested the

[6:52] uncreated there would be no escape from

[6:56] the born the manifested and the created

[7:01] and I I'm adding in my free translation

[7:05] and you would be completely stuck in it

[7:06] and with it so there is a dimension in

[7:13] every human that is far deeper than what

[7:21] you conventionally consider is the eye

[7:30] so you cannot say there is a there is

[7:33] the eye that it is defined through

[7:36] thought and there is a deeper eye that

[7:40] is not defined and the purpose of your

[7:46] existence really is in evolutionary

[7:49] terms is to find that deeper being the

[7:58] undefined the unknown and bring that

[8:01] into this dimension and into your life

[8:09] and you you all make that you have made

[8:12] the discovery already that you don't

[8:17] need to think continuously and that your

[8:21] deeper sense of who you are does not

[8:23] depend on what your mind is saying about

[8:26] who you are there is a more immediate

[8:31] much more real sense of I then you could

[8:36] ever find through thinking about who you

[8:41] are so to to access the unmanifested the

[8:49] unborn the uncreated if you want to use

[8:52] those words you have to find within

[8:58] yourself the space of no thought which

[9:01] is always there is just covered up by

[9:04] continuous thought doesn't have to be

[9:17] so gradually you find that the unknown

[9:27] you comes through more and more first

[9:36] you have to become become comfortable I

[9:38] mention it briefly the other day first

[9:41] you need to become comfortable when you

[9:44] enter that space with not knowing

[9:48] anything because that is the you're

[9:51] accessing the unknown the undefined

[9:55] which is primordial intelligence itself

[9:59] not intelligence it has become thought

[10:04] that's the only thing you can measure to

[10:06] a limited degree but there's primordial

[10:10] intelligence in order to access that you

[10:15] have to give up not completely because

[10:20] it's still there but your reliance

[10:25] exclusive reliance and main reliance on

[10:30] [Music]

[10:31] accumulated knowledge and on thinking if

[10:36] you don't give up your reliance on

[10:40] conditioned knowledge and thinking you

[10:44] can never go beyond so you would be very

[10:47] limited not be creative and ultimately

[10:53] not wise you can have a highly developed

[10:56] mind but lacking in wisdom and to have a

[11:03] highly developed mind and lacking in

[11:06] wisdom as an underlying guiding force

[11:10] and that comes from the deeper level to

[11:14] have that highly developed mind whether

[11:16] it's a person or a society culture is a

[11:22] dangerous thing because that mind can

[11:25] create havoc for yourself

[11:29] to others and the more developed it is

[11:32] the more destructive it potentially is

[11:36] also so you find that often with people

[11:42] who some people who run countries of

[11:48] course they have a university degree and

[11:53] they well not all but some might be

[11:57] considered intelligent in conventional

[11:59] terms and yet very often their actions

[12:05] are actually very unintelligent they

[12:09] don't don't take into account the

[12:11] totality of the situation the deeper

[12:14] implications of their actions so they

[12:18] are not whatever they say or do is not

[12:23] connected to the realm of wisdom don't

[12:30] need to mention any names but look at

[12:32] any politician that comes to mind look

[12:36] at the past 20 years some may come to

[12:42] mind such lack of wisdom quite amazing

[12:51] and then you have the highly developed

[12:54] industry that creates dreadful weapons

[13:00] of destruction and these people who make

[13:05] these they're all intelligent they

[13:08] otherwise they wouldn't be able to do

[13:10] that but the peer how can you build an

[13:17] atom bomb without intelligence it

[13:19] requires highly intelligent people so

[13:29] wisdom intelligence needs to be guided

[13:37] by something deeper and that deeper then

[13:41] needs to can actually use the the mind

[13:44] the human mind as an instrument for its

[13:49] expression and so again in order to get

[13:59] to that place which is not a place it's

[14:01] just a deeper dimension to who you are

[14:08] you need to give up that reliance that

[14:12] that unconscious belief that you

[14:16] continuously need to think to work

[14:18] things out because otherwise you things

[14:22] will get out of control so every moment

[14:29] you hit need to have some kind of comes

[14:32] to some kind of conclusion about this

[14:33] what's happening at this moment you

[14:35] immediately have some kind of opinion in

[14:37] conclusion and call it something and

[14:43] often at school that quick like the

[14:45] quick R is like very quick comeback is

[14:50] often encouraged some people who are

[14:52] when the teacher ask questions the one

[14:55] who can give the quickest answer is

[14:57] usually considered the best and then

[15:01] there are others who may be slower and

[15:06] they don't even have time to raise the

[15:08] hand because they haven't it hasn't sunk

[15:10] in yet the question hasn't the question

[15:13] needs to sing in for and then at some

[15:16] point and an answer may come but they

[15:18] don't wait for them there was for

[15:26] example when when Einstein was four

[15:30] years old his parents became concerned

[15:33] because the serious concern was that he

[15:37] might be mentally

[15:40] because he was so slow

[15:43] it was sinking so we need to have that

[15:52] courage to go into that unknown place

[15:57] and what is that unknown place which is

[16:00] not a place it's not to impose

[16:05] immediately interpretations on the world

[16:08] and on situations and on people and

[16:11] whatever arises so to be able to just

[16:14] look at things look not just visually

[16:18] but look in also use metaphorically

[16:20] which means to give attention to

[16:22] whatever is here now and to feel the

[16:27] power of your attention itself which is

[16:32] intelligence like a light light shines

[16:34] on a situation on a person and to feel

[16:38] that inherent power of consciousness

[16:43] that force is not doesn't is not

[16:45] produced by you it comes through you

[16:50] then you feel a knows amount of

[16:56] so-called self confidence not egoic self

[17:02] confidence but you are connected with

[17:05] you can feel there's a power at the

[17:09] depths of who you are and that power can

[17:15] flow into this moment and it is there

[17:19] when you give your fullest attention to

[17:22] something and you're not thinking about

[17:24] it

[17:25] you're just looking you're just giving

[17:27] attention it could be a situation a

[17:30] person you're looking at whatever it is

[17:33] you're just there as a field of

[17:36] attention of awareness and so you are

[17:41] the bringer of awareness and that flows

[17:46] from a deep place that is far transcends

[17:49] who you are as this physical form

[17:52] that that deep lace connects you not

[17:56] only with others or other humans it also

[18:01] connects you with the source of all life

[18:05] and so you are not disconnected you just

[18:08] seem to be and the ego is a disconnected

[18:12] sense of self you are not disconnected

[18:14] from the totality of the universe you

[18:20] are an aspect of the totality of the

[18:24] universe you're not autonomous that's

[18:30] the delusion that every person is

[18:32] considered to be an independent

[18:35] consciousness whereas the truth is every

[18:39] person is an expression of the one

[18:42] consciousness so when you can't feel

[18:46] that one consciousness as presence

[18:48] within yourself you don't go around in

[18:53] continuous anxiety anymore what's the

[18:57] next thing that's going to upset me and

[19:00] of course it always comes so in other

[19:05] words a certain confidence comes in that

[19:08] is not based on anything that you have

[19:11] perhaps achieved on the level of form

[19:14] it's not confidence because you have an

[19:16] important position it's not confidence

[19:19] because you have accumulated wealth not

[19:22] confidence because other people think

[19:24] you're great or not confidence because

[19:27] you have a certain ability that you have

[19:30] to develop that you're better at and

[19:31] most people usually those things on you

[19:35] look you look better than most people at

[19:38] least above-average either good looks or

[19:42] you have a great body so all those

[19:45] things could give you your sense of

[19:50] confidence so a person who is very

[19:53] good-looking would gain most unless

[19:57] there are other factors where that

[19:59] person is even more remarkable but in

[20:01] the absence of other factors

[20:04] the good-looking person what

[20:06] predominantly gained self-confidence

[20:08] from looking in the mirror and seeing

[20:13] other people's reactions to who they are

[20:16] which could be admiration and envy

[20:18] depending on who is looking at you and

[20:21] the ego would quite love that it loves

[20:25] admiration and envy and so it feels you

[20:30] feel confident because you're so good

[20:32] and good-looking and that last four

[20:36] could last for a few years and then it

[20:42] gets shaky because good looks neck don't

[20:48] last indefinitely and that's just one

[20:51] example but whatever it is it could be

[20:54] wealth it could be what other people

[20:57] think of you so you derive confidence

[21:01] from some source but it's always very

[21:05] shaky

[21:12] you

[21:14] you

Ego-based confidence depends on external validation—achievements, wealth, appearance, status—and is therefore fragile and subject to anxiety. Authentic confidence arises from presence and alignment with universal consciousness, independent of external circumstances or others' opinions, making it stable and rooted in connection rather than separation.
Yes, and according to Tolle, a highly developed intellect without wisdom becomes dangerous. Examples include intelligent politicians making unwise decisions and weapons engineers creating destructive technologies. Intelligence without wisdom as its guide can create havoc; wisdom must come from the deeper unmanifested dimension of consciousness to direct intelligence safely.
You access primordial intelligence by entering the space of no-thought, which is always present but covered by mental chatter. This requires relinquishing exclusive reliance on accumulated knowledge and thinking, becoming comfortable with not-knowing, and allowing understanding to emerge rather than forcing immediate conclusions.
You have a manifested self—your body, thoughts, roles, and accumulated identity—and an unmanifested self, the formless consciousness prior to thought. The deeper dimension (what Buddha called the unborn, uncreated) is your true nature and does not depend on form or thought to exist.
The cultural demand for immediate answers trains the mind to impose quick conclusions without allowing full understanding to sink in. This prevents access to primordial intelligence, which requires time for the question to penetrate deeply. Genuine wisdom often emerges when you resist the urge to interpret immediately and instead observe openly.
The ego operates from the illusion that you are autonomous and separate from the universe, which creates continuous anxiety about threats and the need for validation. Authentic presence reveals that you are not separate—every person is an expression of one universal consciousness—dissolving the egoic anxiety.
Tolle uses the yogi magician's seven-minute breath-hold as a metaphor: holding your breath requires absolute presence and the cessation of thought, because thinking would panic the mind. Similarly, accessing deeper consciousness requires you to stop the continuous stream of thinking and rest in pure awareness.
