Dealing With Unconscious Peopleas Spiritual Practice

Most human challenges arise from interactions with ego-driven, unconscious people. Rather than avoiding or resisting these interactions, Eckhart Tolle teaches that unconscious individuals serve as essential catalysts for deepening presence and consciousness. The practice is not about changing them, but about maintaining your own presence while they remain unconscious. When you reach a certain level of awareness, external challenges no longer pull you into reactivity—instead, they strengthen your consciousness. Relationships become a primary spiritual practice, and your own state of consciousness has a subtle but real effect on those around you.

Why Unconscious People Present the Central Human Challenge

Most of the difficulties we encounter in life do not stem from our bodies or financial circumstances. Instead, they come through other people. As Tolle notes, "people mostly to who we get challenged by other sources of challenge are of course your physical body could present a challenge um there can be Financial challenges but most large part of challenges come through humans because humans are difficult many humans are still very much trapped in ego." This observation is not pessimistic—it is practical. Recognizing that people are the primary source of challenge allows you to work with that reality rather than pretend it doesn't exist.

The Early Isolation That Often Follows Awakening

After his shift in consciousness, Tolle experienced significant isolation. He initially continued his academic work, but within three or four years, he had to leave that world entirely. "Many years happened when I was not related to the world to any of the usual channels I had no particular job uh no relationships no close relationships and I spent many many days weeks months not seeing that many people." Over time, people gradually came to him through word of mouth seeking advice. This pattern—initial isolation followed by gradual reconnection—is not unusual for those in early stages of spiritual awakening. The isolation itself serves a purpose, but it is not permanent. Eventually, consciousness creates its own connections.

Unconscious People as Spiritual Exercise

Tolle reframes unconscious people using an analogy from physical training. "If you want to make the body stronger you do exercise you do physical exercise and what is physical exercise it's making life difficult for the body." When you lift weights or run a distance, you force your body beyond its comfort zone, and through that challenge, it becomes stronger. The same principle applies to consciousness. Unconscious people who challenge you are not obstacles to your practice—they are the practice itself. Without them, your presence would not intensify. Without friction, awareness does not deepen.

This requires a fundamental shift in how you regard unconscious people. Rather than viewing them as problems to solve or people who shouldn't be here, regard them as "a necessary part of being here on this planet at this time." When someone makes your life difficult, you can welcome that challenge because it is the exact circumstance you need in order to become more conscious. This is not resignation or spiritual bypassing. It is clear seeing of how growth actually happens.

The Critical Threshold: When Challenges Make You More Conscious Rather Than Less

There is a turning point in human development beyond which challenges no longer pull you into unconsciousness. Before reaching this point, reactivity dominates. "Up to a certain point of human development the moment a situation gets challenging or you meet a challenging person you become reactive and become more unconscious than you were before you were challenged." An angry person makes you angry. A confrontational person triggers confrontation in you. You lose presence.

However, "a certain thing happens you reach that level where Beyond which the challenges make you more conscious." Most people who are engaged in conscious work have crossed this threshold or are crossing it. When challenges arise now—whether through situations or people—you become more present rather than being pulled into unconscious reaction. This is the shift that transforms relationships from sources of suffering into primary spiritual practices. The challenge itself becomes your practice.

Relationships as the Main Spiritual Practice

Once you understand that challenges strengthen presence, you can view all relationships as spiritual practice. "If you realize relationships are your spiritual practice whether they are short relationships or at work or family relationships if you can shift your the the way you look at relationships and then regard relationships as spiritual practice it's much easier to deal with unconscious humans." This is not mere reframing—it changes what the relationship is for. When you stop seeing a difficult person as someone who is ruining your day and start seeing them as someone who is inviting you deeper into presence, the entire dynamic shifts.

Presence as a Subtle but Real Force

Tolle shares a personal experience that reveals something surprising: your consciousness has a real effect on those around you. After his shift in consciousness, his father's second wife developed acute paranoia and spent time in a mental home. She was deeply trapped in unconsciousness, constructing elaborate stories about enemies following her. When Tolle visited, he would become "intensely present" the moment he saw her. What happened next is remarkable: as he remained in deep presence while she spoke, "by the second day the story would subside a little bit and by the third day she wouldn't talk that much." Her unconsciousness shifted in response to his presence.

Once, when Tolle became less present during a visit, the effect reversed immediately. "Once or twice it happened that I was not acutely present when she was talking and immediately the old stories would come back up she would even look at me suspiciously." He noticed that his own state of consciousness directly affected her state of consciousness. "My Consciousness had an effect on her State of Consciousness." This is not hyperbole. Consciousness has a ripple effect. Your presence can ease the suffering of those around you, though it cannot force lasting change. That depends on their own readiness to awaken.

The Crucial Distinction: Presence Is Not the Same as Fixing

The effect Tolle observed is important to understand correctly. His deep presence eased his father's wife's acute paranoia temporarily. "She became more sane while I was there and the moment I left she went back into complete unconsciousness." His presence did not cure her unconsciousness or make lasting change in her. It created a temporary shift while the field of his consciousness was present. This reveals something essential: you cannot wake someone up who is not ready to wake up. You can be present, you can create a coherent field, you can be a teaching through your presence—but the other person's awakening depends on their own readiness and choice.

This is crucial for anyone dealing with deeply unconscious people. You do not need to make them conscious. Your only work is to stay conscious yourself while they remain as they are. When you stop trying to change unconscious people and instead use their unconsciousness as an invitation to deepen your presence, the entire dynamic changes. The practice becomes clear.

The Practice: Staying Present Without Being Pulled In

The actual practice is straightforward but challenging: remain present while unconscious people are being unconscious with you. This is harder than it sounds because unconscious people are trying to pull you into their world. An angry person wants to provoke anger. A critical person wants to provoke defensiveness. A paranoid person wants to provoke anxiety. Your only task is to not comply. Stay in presence. Do not join them in their story. Do not react from ego. Listen from awareness.

This is not cold or detached. Tolle's presence with his father's wife was not distant. He listened to her stories, engaged with her, and remained fully present. The practice is not about emotional distance—it is about staying rooted in awareness while you interact. It is about letting their unconsciousness be what it is without making it mean something is wrong with you or with them. They are unconscious. That is what unconscious people are like. Your consciousness is not threatened by their lack of it.

Where to Go From Here

If you are dealing with unconscious people—whether in your family, workplace, or wider relationships—you now have a framework for transformation. First, stop seeing them as problems and start seeing them as invitations. Second, recognize your own threshold: have you reached the point where challenges make you more conscious rather than less? If not, that is your work. If yes, then the work becomes clearer: stay present, use the difficulty as exercise for awareness, and notice how your consciousness affects the field around you. You cannot fix them. You can only deepen yourself. And paradoxically, the more deeply you deepen, the more those around you may shift—not because you are trying to change them, but because presence itself is a force that eases suffering.

[0:06] a question for you

[0:08] regarding dealing with unconscious

[0:10] people and whether you yourself um maybe

[0:14] more so earlier in your life whether you

[0:18] have felt lonely or isolated or

[0:22] frustrated in dealing with unconscious

[0:25] people and what your approach was to

[0:28] that at different stages of your life

[0:30] life right yes thank

[0:41] you

[0:42] well that perhaps is the main

[0:47] challenge to for everybody

[0:50] because it is people

[0:54] mostly to who we get challenged by other

[0:58] sources of challenge are of course

[1:00] course your physical body could present

[1:03] a

[1:04] challenge um there can be Financial

[1:11] challenges but

[1:14] most large part of challenges come

[1:17] through humans because humans are

[1:21] difficult many humans are still very

[1:24] much trapped in

[1:26] ego first part of your

[1:29] question there was I've i' I was

[1:32] relatively isolated for many years of my

[1:36] life when uh after the shift in

[1:41] Consciousness I carried on with my

[1:43] normal life it had a certain momentum I

[1:45] was still in the academic world and then

[1:49] 3 4 years later I had to go out of that

[1:53] leave it behind completely and then many

[1:56] years happened when I was not related to

[1:59] the world to any of the usual channels I

[2:03] had no particular

[2:05] job

[2:07] uh no relationships no close

[2:12] relationships and I spent many many days

[2:16] weeks

[2:17] months not seeing that many people and

[2:21] gradually people would come to me for

[2:24] advice that happened gradually slowly

[2:28] grew through word of mouse

[2:31] and then I had that kind of relationship

[2:33] with

[2:34] humans but throughout there's always

[2:38] challenges even if you live in relative

[2:41] isolation you will come into contact

[2:44] with humans that are

[2:49] unconscious so I think the you need to

[2:53] welcome that

[2:56] because it's that it's all those

[2:59] challenges for

[3:01] you to become more

[3:04] present you remember I talked about the

[3:07] other day if you want to make the body

[3:11] stronger you do exercise you do physical

[3:15] exercise and what is physical exercise

[3:18] it's making life difficult for the

[3:21] body that's a a new way of looking at it

[3:24] but if you look at it close you'll see

[3:26] it it is true because the body suddenly

[3:29] has to make an enormous effort you're

[3:31] forcing the body you're giving the body

[3:34] challenges that were not there before

[3:37] lift to heavy weight run a mile or

[3:41] whatever it is you're doing and so then

[3:45] through being challenged Beyond its

[3:48] comfort zone the body gets

[3:51] stronger and in the case

[3:53] of spiritual growth we need all those

[3:59] unconscious humans to challenge

[4:03] us otherwise we the presence would not

[4:08] intensify and and arise so the first

[4:12] thing we need to do and I learned that

[4:15] also to regard these unconscious humans

[4:18] as

[4:20] blessings so rather than believing you

[4:23] shouldn't be here making my life

[4:27] difficult regard the UNC human as

[4:30] something a necessary part of being here

[4:33] on this planet at this time and so you

[4:37] can

[4:38] welcome them when they make life

[4:42] difficult for you the important thing is

[4:45] though that humans the unconscious

[4:48] humans do not pull

[4:50] you into unconsciousness yourself that's

[4:53] that is the challenge the biggest

[4:56] challenge and what I mentioned in the

[4:58] previous session also applies here

[5:00] here when you are being

[5:03] challenged by situations or people up to

[5:08] a certain point of human

[5:10] development the moment a situation gets

[5:13] challenging or you meet a challenging

[5:14] person you become

[5:16] reactive and become more unconscious

[5:19] than you were before you were challenged

[5:23] so you meet a an angry person you get

[5:26] angry

[5:28] yourself uh you meet a confrontational

[5:31] person and you become even more

[5:33] confrontational you're fighting then a

[5:36] certain thing happens you reach that

[5:38] level where Beyond which the challenges

[5:42] make you more conscious I think most of

[5:45] people here will have reached the level

[5:49] where one you may occasionally be pulled

[5:52] back yes but may have reach the level

[5:54] where from now on when challenges come

[5:57] into your life through situations or

[5:59] people

[6:02] you become more present rather than be

[6:03] pulled into unconscious

[6:05] reaction and that's your spiritual

[6:08] practice that can be your main spiritual

[6:10] practice so if you realize relationships

[6:13] are your spiritual practice whether they

[6:15] are short relationships or at work or

[6:17] family

[6:19] relationships if you can shift your the

[6:22] the way you look at

[6:24] relationships and then regard

[6:27] relationships as spiritual practice

[6:30] it's much easier to deal with

[6:32] unconscious humans and then the

[6:34] challenge is to stay

[6:36] present while they are being unconscious

[6:38] with

[6:40] you I learned that early on when after

[6:45] my shift in

[6:47] Consciousness my father's second

[6:51] wife was quite

[6:54] unconscious and then not only

[6:56] unconscious she developed a mental

[6:58] illness but the unconsciousness was

[7:00] already the mental illness was already

[7:02] hidden in the unconsciousness the mental

[7:05] illness she was acute paranoia and she

[7:08] was in a mental home for a while then

[7:10] came back home whenever I visited them

[7:13] once or twice as I mentioned before I

[7:15] stayed in

[7:17] hotels but many times I went there visit

[7:21] stayed with

[7:23] them and I realized the moment I saw her

[7:31] I would become intensely present I would

[7:33] just

[7:34] [Music]

[7:35] go and then she would start talking to

[7:38] me usually the stories would start with

[7:42] talking about her enemies the people who

[7:44] were waiting down in the street and we

[7:47] would follow her people she would see in

[7:50] in shops and according to those stories

[7:53] there must be at least one or 200 people

[7:56] whose main occupation is to follow her

[7:59] and make her life difficult but that was

[8:02] the story so I had to listen the moment

[8:04] I arrived she would tell me the latest

[8:07] events of what happened to all these

[8:09] people who were following her and doing

[8:12] things to sabotage her life all

[8:17] fictitious

[8:22] and immediately I went into very intense

[8:27] presence and by the second day the story

[8:30] would subside a little bit and by the

[8:33] third day she wouldn't talk that

[8:35] much

[8:38] and once or twice it happened

[8:43] that I was not acutely present when she

[8:47] was talking and immediately the old

[8:49] stories would come back up she would

[8:51] even look at me

[8:52] suspiciously say uh what do you why are

[8:56] you really here what do you want from me

[9:02] so I I noticed there was

[9:04] a my Consciousness had an effect on her

[9:07] State of

[9:09] Consciousness so that was particularly

[9:11] noticeable in that

[9:14] case

[9:15] and she became more sane while I was

[9:19] there and the moment I left she went

[9:22] back

[9:24] into complete

[9:28] unconsciousness for

[9:33] [Music]

[10:01] oh

[10:07] [Music]

The key is to recognize that challenging people serve as spiritual practice—they invite you to deepen your presence. Rather than reacting to their unconsciousness, remain rooted in awareness, listen without joining their stories, and use their behavior as an opportunity to strengthen your consciousness. Your only task is to stay present; you cannot change them.
Unconscious people are ego-driven and reactive, triggering unconscious responses in others. However, these challenges are necessary for spiritual growth—they function like physical exercise for consciousness. Without external friction, presence does not intensify. Each difficult interaction is an invitation to become more aware.
Yes, but indirectly. Your state of presence can ease suffering and temporarily shift the consciousness of those around you, as Tolle experienced with his father's wife—her paranoia subsided when he was present and returned when he wasn't. However, lasting change depends on the other person's own readiness to awaken, not on your efforts to change them.
Recognize that you have reached a turning point when challenges strengthen rather than weaken your presence. If you are still being pulled into reactivity, that is your practice—develop the ability to stay aware even when provoked. Over time, you will reach the level where external unconsciousness no longer triggers your own.
Yes. Early stages of awakening often bring isolation because you are no longer aligned with unconscious patterns. However, this is temporary. As Tolle experienced, connections gradually develop through word of mouth and mutual seeking. Eventually, your consciousness naturally creates relationships with others on a similar path.
Absolutely. If you shift how you view relationships and regard them as spiritual practice—whether at work, family, or casual—they become far easier to navigate. Each interaction becomes an opportunity to strengthen presence rather than a source of frustration. This reframe transforms the entire dynamic.
