Authenticity and Self-Judgment: FollowingYour Own Integrity

Don Miguel Ruiz shares his journey from medicine to spiritual teaching, explaining how recognizing that the mind—not the body—is the root of suffering led him to develop a transformative framework for authentic living. By understanding that each person creates their own world through beliefs and judgments, we gain the power to change what doesn't serve us. His core teaching centers on ending self-judgment (the "judgment day") so that we stop judging others, and following our own integrity rather than performing roles prescribed by society. The Four Agreements emerged from ten years of intensive work with apprentices and distills the tools needed to reclaim authenticity and replace limiting beliefs with those that bring peace, happiness, and joy.

Understanding the Mind as the Root of Transformation

Don Miguel Ruiz's path to becoming a teacher began not with spiritual seeking but with a clinical observation. Working as a medical doctor, he noticed that the ailments he encountered in his patients stemmed not from the body itself, but from the mind. This insight was radical enough to shift the entire direction of his life. Rather than continue treating physical symptoms, he turned his focus to understanding how the human mind actually works—a question that would occupy decades of study and direct teaching work.

This reorientation led him to his mother, whom he describes as "the greatest teacher I have." She was a well-known spiritual healer, and working alongside her became his first formal training ground. The transition from medicine to spiritual apprenticeship wasn't instantaneous; it unfolded organically through observation and practice. He began teaching a small group of apprentices, a decision born partly from necessity: at that time, he did not speak English fluently. The need to communicate his understanding in a new language forced him to develop clarity and precision in his teaching. As more apprentices arrived and his English improved, he refined his methods continuously, learning as much from his students' transformations as they learned from him.

For ten years, Ruiz worked intensively with his growing groups of apprentices, often taking them to power places like Teotihuacán near Mexico City—sometimes almost every month. He measured progress not by intellectual understanding but by observable life transformation. This long period of direct engagement, watching people genuinely change their lives, deepened his understanding of the mind until it became, as he describes it, "as clear as water." He could see both the individual and humanity's larger patterns with equal clarity.

How We Create Our Own World

Central to Ruiz's teaching is a deceptively simple premise: each person creates their own world. This is not metaphorical. We create our own universe through the beliefs we hold, the judgments we make, and the stories we tell ourselves about reality. Because we are the artists of our own creation, we have the power—and the responsibility—to change what we have created if it no longer serves us.

This understanding became the foundation for The Four Agreements, his most widely known work. After ten years of teaching, Ruiz distilled his insights into a small book that he knew, without doubt, would reach around the world and help transform lives. The challenge was profound: expressing deep wisdom using the limited English he possessed at the time, while keeping the message grounded in common sense—truths he had learned from his family and other masters.

What makes The Four Agreements particularly powerful is its recursive nature. Each time a reader engages with the book, they animate it with their own consciousness. The book then challenges the reader's existing beliefs, helping them shift their concepts and see their world differently. When the reader finishes, the book becomes "dead" again—but the reader's mind has changed. When they return to the book later, they give it life once more, but now they see different layers of meaning they missed before. This dynamic relationship between reader and text makes the book a living guide rather than a fixed instruction manual, adaptable to each person's unique path toward finding themselves.

The Judgment Day and the End of Self-Condemnation

One of Ruiz's most distinctive teachings concerns what he calls "the Judgment Day." This is not a cosmic reckoning but an internal threshold: the moment when you stop judging yourself. The Judgment Day, in his understanding, is the last time you judge yourself. After that point, you no longer judge yourself, and as a direct consequence, you stop judging anyone else.

This teaching reframes humanity's long preoccupation with apocalypse. For centuries, various societies misinterpreted prophecies and sacred texts, convinced they were awaiting the end of the world—the end of humanity, the end of the Earth. But Ruiz suggests the prophecies actually point to something more personal and urgent: the end of your world, the world you have created through your beliefs and judgments. Your judgment day arrives when you release the habit of self-condemnation and, with it, the projection of judgment onto others.

This is not a matter of moral perfection or spiritual achievement. It is a shift in how the mind functions. When you stop using yourself as a target for judgment, you naturally stop using others as targets too. The two are inseparable because judgment operates through the same mechanism whether it is directed inward or outward.

You Are the Artist—Only You Can Change Your Creation

Ruiz returns repeatedly to one core principle: you are the artist of your own world, and only you know what you like and dislike about the world you have created. This is not advice to ignore others or dismiss feedback. Rather, it is a recognition of personal sovereignty. No one else inhabits your reality the way you do. No one else has built it stone by stone through their particular history of choices, beliefs, and reactions. Therefore, no one else can authentically change it for you.

This places responsibility squarely where it belongs—with you. The tools that Ruiz offers through The Four Agreements and his broader teaching are precisely that: tools. They show you how to change what you dislike in your creation and replace limiting beliefs with beliefs that bring peace, happiness, and joy. But the work of transformation is yours alone to undertake.

The teaching is not that your world is separate from others' worlds in a way that makes community meaningless. Rather, it is that your authentic power lies in changing your own creation, which inevitably affects the larger whole. As Ruiz says, when he began teaching and taking on apprentices, he was "completely responsible for my world and I was changing my world and at the same time I was helping my apprentices to change their world." This simultaneous focus—on your own integrity and on supporting others—is the real work.

From Apprentices to a Family Teaching

A major turning point came when Ruiz suffered a heart attack. Upon recovery, he shifted his attention away from large groups of apprentices and focused instead on his own children, watching them grow and develop their own mastery. But his children eventually came to him with a proposal: perhaps it was time to take on apprentices again, but in a new form suited to the contemporary world.

When Ruiz was training apprentices in the last century, the work was intimate and localized—small groups, power places, monthly pilgrimages. Facebook did not exist. The internet as we know it did not exist. But the world has changed completely in thirty years. Now, information can reach anyone anywhere—in the United States, Europe, anywhere in the world. The tools and channels are fundamentally different.

Ruiz accepted his children's invitation, but with an important modification: this time, it would not be just him and individual apprentices. It would be his entire family—"a little more than just my children and you." This shift reflects his core intention since the beginning: to change the world. When he was training small groups, he was changing his own world and helping them change theirs. Now, through his family's collective effort and the reach of modern technology, the intention remains the same but the scale and structure have evolved.

Authenticity as a Choice, Not a Destination

The final teaching Ruiz offers is perhaps the most direct: it is up to you whether you want to follow yourself, your own integrity, and become authentic—to be what you really are and stop pretending to be what you are not. This is phrased not as an aspiration or an ideal, but as a choice available in this moment.

For many people, authenticity feels like a distant goal, something to achieve after years of work. Ruiz's framing suggests it is more immediate: a decision to stop performing, to stop wearing masks, to stop living according to scripts written by others. You already know what is real in you and what is false. You already know the difference between your genuine desire and the roles you have been assigned to play. The question is whether you will honor that knowing.

The Reflections course that Ruiz and his family offer is framed as an invitation, not a mandate. There is a "contract" that "can be broken at any time. You can get out anytime you want to. It doesn't matter." This reflects his larger philosophy: the work of becoming authentic cannot be forced, cannot be imposed, and cannot be borrowed from someone else. It must be chosen, undertaken, and completed by each individual according to their own pace, their own way, their own world.

Where to Go From Here

If you resonate with these teachings, the natural next step is to examine your own creation. What beliefs are you holding that do not serve you? What judgments—of yourself and others—are you ready to release? Where are you performing a role rather than being yourself? These are not questions to answer intellectually but to sit with over time, observing patterns and noticing moments when you have a genuine choice about how to respond.

The Four Agreements themselves offer concrete language and practice. Ruiz's broader teaching on the mind, judgment, and personal power can be explored through his written work and recorded teachings. And for those drawn to a more structured apprenticeship-style engagement, his family continues to offer the Reflections program designed specifically to guide you toward your own authenticity in your own way, rather than imposing a predetermined path.

The central insight remains: you are the artist. The world you live in is your creation. The judgments you carry are yours to release. The authenticity you seek is already within you, waiting only for you to stop pretending and start being. That choice is yours alone.

[0:01] but I see that the main problem it was

[0:04] not in the

[0:05] body it was in our mind and I want to

[0:10] understand how the human mind

[0:15] works then I change the direction of my

[0:19] life in the intent to understand how the

[0:24] mind

[0:25] works then once I renounced to be a

[0:28] medical

[0:29] doctor I went to my

[0:32] mother who was the greatest teacher I

[0:36] have and I learned from

[0:39] her she was a very wellknown

[0:45] spiritual

[0:48] healer I start working with her and I

[0:52] decide to start

[0:54] teaching then I

[0:58] grab the first small group of of

[1:00] apprentices I remember at that

[1:04] time I didn't speak

[1:07] English it was the need to

[1:12] communicate what helped

[1:15] me to start teaching in a different

[1:20] language then I was learning a lot and

[1:23] very

[1:26] fast but at the same time I was

[1:30] sharing what I have in my

[1:34] mind very

[1:37] soon it came more apprentices and more

[1:41] apprentices and my English becomes a

[1:44] little better than better and better and

[1:47] as you can

[1:48] see um I can have some problems with the

[1:55] grammar but it was enough for me to

[1:59] explain what I I have in

[2:04] mind

[2:06] then it was a great

[2:09] adventure in both

[2:11] sides they had the desire to learn I had

[2:15] the desire to teach the result it was

[2:19] wonderful because I see how they start

[2:22] transforming their

[2:25] life and I start changing and changing

[2:28] the ways to share the ways to

[2:32] teach like a year

[2:35] later I have a big crowd of

[2:39] apprentices and that's when I

[2:42] decide to start start taking

[2:46] them in a power places like dewakan

[2:50] which is close to me Mexico

[2:55] City it was a time that I used to bring

[2:57] apprentices there almost every single

[3:03] month and I start measuring the

[3:07] difference in their

[3:10] lives and it was extremely

[3:15] positive I was helping them to change

[3:19] their

[3:24] world it was 10

[3:27] years that I was that I was working very

[3:30] intense with all of them and I see

[3:33] amazing

[3:37] transformation and for

[3:39] me understanding the

[3:42] mind it was Stronger stronger until the

[3:46] moment that it was as clear as water I

[3:50] could understand the

[3:53] individual as I could

[3:56] understand the entire

[3:59] Humanity

[4:03] of course it was a big evolution for

[4:07] myself but I see the big

[4:11] transformation and all that

[4:13] people that I love

[4:17] dearly the result of that of course

[4:21] was a wonderful

[4:24] book The Four

[4:29] Agreements and I shared the

[4:32] tools for

[4:34] transformation how they can

[4:37] change that Masterpiece of art that each

[4:40] one of us

[4:42] create because we create our own

[4:45] world we create our own

[4:50] universe and with those tools we have

[4:54] the opportunity to change everything

[4:57] that we don't like about or our own

[5:02] creation and to replace

[5:04] it for all those

[5:07] beliefs that bring us

[5:10] peace

[5:12] happiness

[5:15] joy Four

[5:17] Agreements who make a big big

[5:22] difference very

[5:24] simple the challenge it was to

[5:28] use the English that I knew at that

[5:33] time in order to

[5:35] express nothing but Common Sense

[5:40] something that I learned from my

[5:44] family and from other Masters Of

[5:47] course that influence in my

[5:51] life for

[5:56] agreements something that I share during

[5:59] all those years years that I train

[6:05] apprentices it was great for me to see

[6:08] the big

[6:10] transformation for

[6:13] agreements when I finished that book I

[6:16] knew without a doubt that this book will

[6:20] go all around the world and make big

[6:24] changes in people's

[6:28] life a book

[6:30] that you can read many times and every

[6:34] time that you read that little book

[6:38] you'll find many other things that you

[6:40] didn't

[6:42] notice to explain that is so

[6:46] simple I put myself in that

[6:49] book in the

[6:52] book die as soon as I

[6:56] finish but have all the power in this

[6:59] little book book that every time that

[7:01] anybody read the

[7:03] book The Reader give life to that

[7:08] book the book becomes

[7:11] aive and it

[7:13] challenge what the reader have in their

[7:16] mind and start helping them to change

[7:19] the concepts that they

[7:22] have when they finish the

[7:24] book the book is dead

[7:27] again when they read it again they give

[7:29] life G but now their mind already

[7:32] changed and they see many other things

[7:34] that they didn't want to see before then

[7:37] that book becomes a guide who can help

[7:41] anyone to find

[7:44] thems in their own pace in their own

[7:48] ways in their own

[7:49] world and it

[7:52] was a

[7:54] merch

[7:55] between Miguel which is in the book and

[7:59] and the

[8:02] reader after a certain point I decide

[8:06] not to have apprentices any

[8:10] longer I have a major heart attack when

[8:14] I come back from the heart

[8:16] attack I focus most of my attention in

[8:19] my own

[8:21] children I see them

[8:24] grow in their own

[8:27] ways until they becomes

[8:31] Masters then my children come to

[8:35] me and say father maybe it's time for

[8:39] you to start taking apprentices once

[8:46] again but in the new ways of the

[8:50] world I remember the last

[8:54] century it was used to be with groups

[8:58] one by one taken to power our places etc

[9:01] etc we didn't have

[9:04] Facebook uh we didn't have all those

[9:06] tools that we have today the world

[9:09] changed completely in the last 30

[9:13] years and now it's so easy to reach you

[9:17] wherever you are you can be here any

[9:20] place in United States any place in

[9:23] Europe in the whole world and this

[9:27] information can go Direct ly to

[9:32] you then I decide to say yes to my

[9:37] children but this time is not just

[9:41] between you and

[9:45] me is my whole

[9:48] family that is a little more than just

[9:51] my

[9:52] children and you because what I really

[9:57] want since the very beginning

[10:00] is to change the

[10:04] world when I start teaching and taking

[10:09] apprentices I was completely

[10:13] responsible for my world and I was

[10:17] changing my world and at the same time I

[10:21] was helping my apprentices to change

[10:23] their

[10:25] world and that's exactly what we were to

[10:29] do once again you know for a long

[10:34] time the entire Humanity was looking for

[10:37] the end of the world those societies

[10:40] they misinterpreted

[10:42] everything and they were thinking that

[10:44] that was the end of humanity the end of

[10:46] the Earth no it's the end of the world

[10:49] that you

[10:50] create and the end of your

[10:54] world comes with the Judgment

[10:58] Day the Judgment

[11:01] Day is the last time that you judge

[11:07] yourself and after that you don't judge

[11:10] yourself any longer and as a result of

[11:13] that you don't judge anybody

[11:16] anymore and this is the goal that we

[11:19] have please help us to change the world

[11:24] the world that you

[11:27] create we give you the

[11:30] TOS you got the directions only you know

[11:34] what you like about the your world and

[11:37] what you don't like about your world

[11:40] because you're the artist you created

[11:42] and only you can change

[11:45] it then this is like a kind of

[11:49] contract between you and

[11:54] us is an

[11:58] agreement that that can can be broke at

[12:00] any

[12:01] time you can get out anytime you want to

[12:04] it doesn't

[12:08] matter but it's up to you if you want to

[12:13] follow yourself your own integrity and

[12:16] to becomes authentic to be what you

[12:19] really are and don't pretend anymore to

[12:22] be what you are

[12:24] not saying that we welcome you

[12:30] to join us if that's what you desire is

[12:34] if this what you really want to help us

[12:38] to guide you to find yourself in your

[12:42] own way not in our way in your

[12:47] way the next time that I will speak

[12:51] about how I get my own authenticity

The Judgment Day is the last time you judge yourself. After that threshold, you stop judging yourself and, as a result, stop judging others as well. It is not a cosmic event but an internal shift in how the mind operates, marking the end of the world you created through self-condemnation and projection.
Ruiz teaches that because you created your own world through your beliefs, you have the power to change it. The Four Agreements provides tools to replace limiting beliefs with those that bring peace, happiness, and joy. The work is personal—only you can change what you have created.
This means you create your reality through the beliefs you hold, the judgments you make, and the stories you tell yourself. Only you know what you like and dislike about your creation, and only you can authentically change it. It is a recognition of your personal sovereignty and responsibility.
As a doctor, Ruiz observed that his patients' ailments stemmed from the mind, not the body. This insight led him to redirect his life toward understanding how the human mind actually works, eventually guiding him to study with his mother and begin teaching.
Each time you read the book, you animate it with your own consciousness, and it challenges your existing beliefs. When you finish, your mind has shifted. When you return to the book later, the same words reveal new layers of meaning because your mind has already changed.
Yes. The core teaching is that you must find yourself in your own way, not in someone else's way. While programs like Reflections offer structure, the essential work of examining your beliefs, releasing self-judgment, and becoming authentic is something you can begin immediately on your own.
Authenticity means being what you really are and stopping the pretense of being what you are not. It is a choice available now, not a distant achievement. It involves following your own integrity rather than performing roles prescribed by society or others.
