Trevor Hall's In and Through the Body (Deluxe Edition) is a 24-track spiritual music album that uses song and lyrical inquiry to explore the liberation of consciousness from conditioned thought patterns, the integration of shadow and light within the self, and the use of direct bodily and emotional experience as a path to freedom. The work draws on themes of surrender, the dissolution of ego boundaries, and the recovery of authentic presence beneath layers of social conditioning and self-deception.

What does it mean to get free when patterns run so deep?

The album opens with the central question: "How you gonna get free this time?" This is not a rhetorical flourish but a genuine inquiry into the nature of liberation. Hall approaches freedom not as an abstract spiritual achievement but as a concrete, embodied process that must be lived repeatedly and tested against the gravitational pull of habitual thought.

Throughout the work, freedom emerges not from transcendence—rising above the body or world—but through an intimate meeting with what is actually present. The opening track, "blue sky mind," invokes a state of consciousness open and spacious, yet grounded in real sensation and feeling. This groundedness matters: Hall's spirituality is not about escaping into abstraction but about moving into deeper contact with the actual texture of experience, including pain, doubt, and the messy negotiations of desire.

How does vulnerability become a doorway?

A recurring image in the album is the door or doorway—an invitation to step through into a new relationship with self and other. In "open doors," Hall frames presence as courageous exposure: "Can you step inside this doorway and tell me love how does the dreamer inside you show her face?" The question assumes that there is a dreamer—a vulnerable, authentic self—that has been hidden or constrained. The doorway is not a barrier but a threshold that requires only honesty and the willingness to be seen.

This theme repeats in "walking through the door," which emphasizes that crossing the threshold demands a kind of active surrender—not resignation but a clear-eyed choice to stop defending against what is true. The door, in Hall's language, is always already open. The work is in recognizing it, and in having the courage to walk through.

What does it mean to accept darkness and light as one whole?

Hall resists the spiritual bypassing that treats transcendence as the erasure of difficult emotion or shadow. In "great storm clouds," he sings: "I got darkness I got light I got everything in between. Don't deny any side." This is a deliberate refusal of spiritual binary thinking—the idea that growth means becoming more "light" and less "dark," more positive and less real.

Instead, Hall proposes an integration: the full spectrum of human experience—grief, rage, desire, fear—is the actual texture of being alive. Denying any part of it creates internal fragmentation and a false self that performs rather than lives. The "great waves" that sweep across consciousness are not problems to be solved but natural movements of awareness itself, arising and passing like weather.

This is reflected in the image of rain and monsoon: natural, necessary, not symbolic of failure but of the body's own purification and movement. In "monsoon cloud," the rain is not a metaphor for tears but the actual presence of water, sky, and the earth's responsiveness. The body itself becomes a landscape where storms are ordinary and regenerative.

Why does Hall emphasize what is spoken but not shown?

In "her," Hall identifies a specific form of social corruption: "Something that we talk about but don't show." This points to a gap between stated values and lived conduct, between words and embodied truth. Spirituality, in this diagnosis, often becomes a language game—a set of refined ideas about compassion, presence, or non-attachment that leave actual behavior and daily practice untouched.

Hall's concern is not moral judgment but the recognition that disintegration between what we profess and what we do creates internal incoherence. The song names this disease without shame, acknowledging it as almost universal. The healing, implied, is not to speak less but to align speech and action, to make visible what we have claimed to value.

What is the function of fire and burning in the work?

"Fire on your house" uses the image of burning not as punishment but as necessary destruction. The fire does not arrive from outside; it is something the self has "brought on yourself." Rather than resist it, Hall proposes: "Let me some fire so I can burn them all"—asking that the walls of defenses and old patterns be allowed to combust entirely.

This echoes the shamanic and alchemical understanding of fire as transformative. The old way is fuel; burning it is not loss but the precondition for genuine renewal. "I'm gonna reach into my fire gonna let that old way burn. This time I won't run." The commitment is to stay present with the heat of transformation rather than flee into numbness or distraction.

How does the album treat the question of romantic or relational love?

"More than love" appears as both a song title and a refrain. Hall sings: "We came for more than love so baby girl don't you run." This phrase does not diminish love but contextualizes it: love is real and necessary, but it is embedded in a larger field of spiritual, embodied inquiry. The "more than love" is the direct perception of the other's being beneath the dream or projection we have made of them.

In "we in a different room," Hall invokes the moment when two people meet in a new way—not as strangers, not as familiar partners, but as presences freshly encountered: "You were in my heart you were bouncing around. Put it down on the floor I put it down on the ground. It was a different culture in a different room." The "different room" is the space of presence where old scripts and roles no longer apply.

Yet Hall does not romanticize: "I'm a soldier you're a soldier so let's climb up this mountain and get over all the things that keep us in the shadows." Love becomes a shared practice of liberation, not an escape from the work. The "battle" of love is not to be won but to be engaged with full awareness.

What is the role of surrender and expectation?

"Without expectation" names a specific state of consciousness—one in which the mind's constant negotiation with fantasy and outcome is temporarily stilled. Hall sings: "We sit in pure absence without expectation collapses." The word "collapses" here is active: expectation does not fade but falls away under its own weight, unable to sustain itself in the face of actual presence.

This is not passive resignation but a deliberate unclenching of the grip of preference and demand. Without expectation, the present moment is allowed to reveal its own texture without being filtered through the grid of what-I-wish-were-true. This clearing is necessary groundwork for genuine intimacy with self and other.

How does Hall treat the concept of god or the sacred?

In "my god," Hall moves fluidly between feminine and masculine imagery, addressing divinity as both "my guide from mother back to mother" and as a call that can be "falling to the calling." The sacred is not presented as distant, transcendent, or exclusively masculine but as immanent, relational, and embodied in the maternal lineage, in natural cycles, and in the felt sense of being called toward authentic presence.

"My god" is not a noun to be possessed but an active relationship—a falling, a calling, a continuous return to what is true. The song refuses doctrinal specificity, holding space for multiple entry points while maintaining a consistent emphasis on direct experience over belief.

What does it mean to let the old story go?

"The old story" is a song about the narrative self—the coherent identity that the mind constructs and defends. "You're always looking for something more don't be a fool. Only running from your own fear it'll catch up now gotta let it die gotta let it go." The old story is the story of "me" pursued by "not-me," the perpetual flight from discomfort and the grasping for security.

Hall identifies a deeper question: "Who will you be if you let it stay? I'm afraid." Letting the old story go requires moving through the terror that without the narrative, there will be nothing—no identity, no ground. But the song proposes that this fear itself is part of the story; it is not truth but another motion of the dream.

The repetition—"Oh no no no you just gotta let that old story go"—is not mechanical but incantatory. It is the kind of repetition that, through musical and emotional immersion, can wear away the grip of habitual identity long enough for genuine openness to emerge.

Where to go from here

Hall's album is not instructional in the conventional sense. It does not offer techniques, lineage, or systematic teaching. Instead, it functions as a mirror and an invitation. The work locates the reader in the very middle of transformation—not at a safe distance from the fire of change, but in its heat. In and Through the Body suggests that the next step in your own unfolding is not to add more knowledge or spiritual practice but to allow what you already know—about presence, vulnerability, the integration of shadow and light—to move from the domain of concept into the domain of lived action. The album's repeated question remains open: How will you get free this time?

[45:29] in our hands

[45:32] [Music]

[45:43] that

[45:46] the whole earth and the sky

[45:49] is enlightened with her beauty

[45:54] she's like the moon luckily recalling

[45:57] through the thunder back to my

[46:00] [Music]

[46:12] she told me

[46:13] the man another man this is my god

[46:17] [Music]

[46:21] forever falling to the colon that is my

[46:25] god

[46:28] [Music]

[46:41] this is

[46:45] [Music]

[46:56] foreign

[47:03] [Music]

[47:11] is

[47:13] [Music]

[47:24] is

[47:27] [Music]

[47:38] is

[47:45] [Music]

[48:05] i don't want you to be a stranger i just

[48:08] want to call you my own

[48:12] my own

[48:16] i don't want you to be a stranger i

[48:20] wanna be tied to your soul

[48:22] [Music]

[48:24] your soul

[48:28] [Music]

[48:57] i tell you i waste no time

[49:04] [Music]

[49:15] no

[49:19] [Music]

[49:38] i don't want you to be a stranger i just

[49:42] want to call you my

[49:44] [Music]

[49:49] i don't want you to be a stranger i want

[49:53] to be tied to your soul

[49:57] if

[49:58] [Music]

[50:10] subliminal

[50:12] [Music]

[50:33] [Music]

[50:43] [Music]

[50:48] i don't want you to be a stranger i just

[50:51] want to call you my own

[50:59] i don't want you to be a stranger i

[51:03] wanna be tied to yourself

[51:09] [Music]

[51:35] [Music]

[51:39] so

[51:41] [Music]

[51:50] you could play it out

[51:54] but all of it's in your

[51:57] head

[51:59] [Music]

[52:01] hold it on with both two

[52:05] [Music]

[52:11] is it really you

[52:15] knocking at your own door

[52:19] [Music]

[52:22] always looking for something

[52:25] more

[52:28] don't be a fool

[52:31] [Music]

[52:34] don't be a fool

[52:37] [Music]

[52:38] oh no no no

[52:41] you just gotta let that old story go

[52:53] [Music]

[52:58] it's a start

[53:03] [Music]

[53:05] it's a star

[53:06] [Music]

[53:23] [Music]

[53:24] only running from your own fear

[53:31] it'll catch up now

[53:34] gotta let it die

[53:38] gotta let it go it's always

[53:42] [Music]

[53:45] who will you be if you let it stay

[53:53] i'm afraid

[53:54] [Music]

[53:57] i'm afraid

[54:01] oh no no no

[54:04] you just gotta let that old story go

[54:16] [Music]

[54:21] it's a start

[54:23] [Music]

[54:32] [Music]

[54:35] go

[54:37] [Music]

[54:43] [Music]

[54:49] it's a storm

[54:51] [Music]

[55:07] [Music]

[55:15] [Music]

[55:25] oh no no no

[55:27] you just gotta let that old story go

[55:32] oh no no no

[55:34] you just gotta let that old story go

[55:39] oh no no no

[55:41] you just gotta let that old story go

[55:48] you just gotta let that old story go

[56:03] [Music]

[56:19] hmm

[56:22] [Music]

[56:36] oh

[56:49] [Music]

[56:54] everything passing and changing

[56:59] i can see memories fading

[57:04] this i have been contemplating

[57:08] [Music]

[57:14] all of these patterns of weather

[57:17] [Music]

[57:19] nothing is lasting

[57:23] [Music]

[57:25] path of forever

[57:34] so i have been patiently seeking

[57:39] the heart that is

[57:43] [Music]

[58:04] mother divine

[58:08] [Music]

[58:20] the spirit dances

[58:26] [Music]

[58:42] what will you find

[58:45] [Music]

[58:57] [Applause]

[58:59] [Music]

[59:19] so

[59:22] [Music]

[59:29] [Applause]

[59:30] [Music]

[59:36] so

[59:41] [Music]

[1:00:05] [Music]

[1:00:11] [Music]

[1:00:12] me

[1:00:16] out of your mind

[1:00:21] [Music]

[1:00:29] [Music]

[1:00:42] [Music]

[1:00:43] let it ruin

[1:00:45] your soul

[1:00:54] [Music]

[1:01:17] i

[1:01:20] am

[1:01:22] [Applause]

[1:03:18] [Music]

[1:03:26] [Music]

[1:03:34] uh

[1:03:38] [Music]

[1:04:00] just the thought

[1:04:02] [Music]

[1:04:05] here

[1:04:06] the hanger

[1:04:07] [Music]

[1:04:09] sunbury

[1:04:10] [Music]

[1:04:19] i heard

[1:04:21] [Music]

[1:04:31] how you gonna hold all that

[1:04:34] [Music]

[1:04:44] put all of it out of your mind

[1:04:48] [Music]

[1:05:17] [Music]

[1:05:29] don't look

[1:05:32] [Music]

[1:05:38] now you go to war with yourself

[1:05:41] you got other things to do now

[1:05:47] [Music]

[1:05:51] let go let go let go

[1:05:54] of everything holding you down

[1:05:57] [Music]

[1:06:03] i

[1:06:05] [Music]

[1:06:06] [Applause]

[1:06:07] [Music]

[1:06:31] put down

[1:06:39] you better down your feet

[1:06:42] [Music]

[1:06:51] [Music]

[1:07:01] [Music]

[1:07:07] [Music]

[1:07:17] [Music]

[1:07:26] [Music]

[1:07:54] one down

[1:07:58] [Music]

[1:08:12] put down

[1:08:16] [Music]

[1:08:26] [Music]

[1:08:46] [Music]

[1:09:03] sometimes i never know

[1:09:14] [Music]

[1:09:22] [Music]

[1:09:31] so baby girl

[1:11:07] so baby girl don't

[1:11:11] you came for more than love

[1:11:15] [Music]

[1:11:35] [Music]

[1:11:45] so

[1:11:51] [Music]

[1:11:58] [Applause]

[1:12:03] [Music]

[1:12:11] [Music]

[1:12:19] [Music]

[1:12:43] [Music]

[1:12:48] we came for

[1:12:54] [Music]

[1:13:09] more than

[1:13:11] [Music]

[1:13:25] [Music]

[1:13:30] whoa

[1:15:07] sometimes sometimes i wish i took a

[1:15:10] simpler route

[1:15:12] instead of having demons that as big as

[1:15:14] my house

[1:15:16] have a ball with a dribble and bounce

[1:15:19] cause the party ain't over till they're

[1:15:21] kicking me out

[1:15:23] isn't it funny we could make a lot of

[1:15:25] money by a lot of things just to feel a

[1:19:33] your skin

[1:19:36] [Music]

[1:19:46] i felt like we were meeting for the

Hall approaches freedom not as an abstract spiritual goal but as a concrete, embodied process of releasing conditioned patterns and habitual thought. Freedom emerges through intimate contact with actual present experience—including pain, doubt, and desire—rather than through transcendence or escape from the body and world.
Hall emphasizes that love is embedded in a larger field of spiritual inquiry, expressed in the refrain 'We came for more than love.' He frames relational love as a shared practice of liberation where two people meet in authentic presence beyond old scripts and roles, requiring both vulnerability and the courage to face shadow material together.
The old story is the narrative identity constructed by the mind—the coherent sense of self that the ego defends. Letting it go requires moving through the fear that without this story there will be no ground, recognizing that the fear itself is part of the dream rather than truth.
Hall resists spiritual bypassing that treats growth as becoming more 'light' and less 'dark.' Instead, he proposes that the full spectrum of human experience—grief, rage, desire, fear—is the actual texture of being alive. Denying any part creates internal fragmentation and a false self that performs rather than lives.
The title <em>In and Through the Body</em> emphasizes that liberation is not abstract but must be lived through direct bodily and emotional experience. The body becomes a landscape where natural processes like rain and fire are regenerative, and where authentic presence replaces conditioned patterns.
For Hall, surrender is not passive resignation but a deliberate unclenching of the grip of preference and demand. Without expectation, the present moment reveals its own texture. Surrender is an active choice to stop defending against what is true and to walk through the open doorway of vulnerability.
Hall frames vulnerability as a doorway that requires honesty and willingness to be seen. He assumes there is an authentic, dreaming self beneath conditioning that longs to show its true face. Crossing this threshold demands courage to expose oneself while recognizing the door is already open.
